Blocking is very important, especially in fight with a stronger opponent
Melee combat in Risen 3, although it may be demanding, becomes easier after you implement some simple rules:
- Start a fight, with every new opponent (that you encounter for the first time) by blocking (hold down the appropriate key/button). Most usually, opponents have 1-2 attacking patterns. After you learn them, you will be able to land your blows safely, without getting exposed to unnecessary damage.
- Some opponents can perform attacks that knock your character off balance. To avoid damage, perform dodges (double-tap the appropriate key/button).
- Some of the stronger opponents attack in the way that you cannot block, right at the beginning. In such a situation, perform a dodge, while staying around the companion. This way, the companion lands several blows of his own and provoke attack on self. Then, you will be able to step into action safely.
- The stronger attacks (holding down an appropriate key/button) should only be used by you, only if you are sure that you have enough time to launch the attack. The safest situations are the ones, in which the opponent is occupied with fighting your ally.
- As soon as possible, unlock the Riposte ability. With good timing, this turns your block into a counterattack, thanks to which you avoid taking damage and lock on the opponent as the target of your subsequent attacks.
- If you want to be proficient at fighting, do not neglect investing into appropriate skills. Depending on your preferences/equipment, you should train your skills at piercing, slashing weapons and swords. Also, you should remember that the more advanced skills may require - depending on the weapon - not only a certain level of proficiency with the weapon, but also an appropriate level of agility or toughness.
- Do not forget about using firearms, crossbows or throwing daggers. If used at an appropriate moment, they can interfere with the rhythm of the opponent's attack, which will buy you time to land your own blows.
- Do not stay put in one place. When enemies are attacking from many directions, thanks to the directional keys/ the analog stick, to change from one to the other. Thanks to this, you will not break your combo and the opponents will be unable to reach you.
