Black Magic Experiments | Crew quests Risen 3 Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
How to unlock the quest: through conversation with Bones (at any given moment, after your first journey with the sloop) or after using the bed for the first time.
Quest giver: Bones
The chance to add this quest to your journal will come around after your first journey aboard the sloop, or to be more specific, after leaving the Crab Coast. After initiating a conversation with Bones, the man will suggest the main character to get some rest. To do so, you must find a bed (in one of the houses on the dry land or inside a cabin on some larger ship) and use it.
Note - you can also skip the conversation with Bones, and interact with any bed from your own will. Regardless of your approach, a scene from the Afterlife will commence.
Instead of showing you the standard rest options, the game will send the Nameless Hero to the Afterlife (Underworld; 200 Glory Points). Here, you must locate Mendoza and speak with the ghost of the pirate. Regardless of your conversation choices, you will soon leave this place
After returning to the land of the living, initiate another conversation with Bones. Tell him about the nightmares troubling you at night, and about meeting Mendoza while being in the Afterlife. This way you will learn more about the Afterlife. Bones will tell the main character about the ways of accumulating the positive and negative soul points, and will suggest him to find a shaman and acquire a Black Heart.
Note - if you mentioned Mendoza during the conversation with Bones, you will unlock another crew-related quest called "The Inquisitor".
From this moment on, during your next attempts to try to use the bed, from time to time you will be transferred to the Afterlife. Each of those encounters will be short and without much content, but you will be able to collect Soul Dusts scattered around the area. After you wake up, you can talk to Mendoza about that (one of the crew members possible to recruit).
From the undead inquisitor, you will learn that he is willing to buy the dust from the Nameless One. The rate is five units of soul dust per 200 gold pieces.
During the successive vision, the Nameless One will also run into more unique characters with whom to talk. These are Steelbeard, who is the protagonist's father, Ursegor, who is the Titan Lord, and also Mara and Slayne.
Note - If you have not found/included Mendoza into the crew (see the walkthrough for "The Inquisitor" crew quest) simply continue collecting soul dust and don't sell it during your meetings with merchants.
As it was mentioned before, Bones, after your first Afterlife encounter, will suggest you to find a Black Heart and a shaman. A black heart (Raw Black Heart) can be collected by eliminating any of the Shadow Lords, or to be more specific, some sort of a boss enemy (those monsters are sometimes associated with some of the main and side quests). Each of the lords lefts one heart and Bones will suggest you to collect them.
During the mentioned conversation with Bones (after collecting the first black heart), it's worth asking the man about one of the black hearts the man has in his possession, which he left for himself on a "dark hour". Convince the ally to tell you to location in which the artifact is hidden. You will also learn that you will have to reach Bones' hideout located in Tacarigua. Additionally, you will be given an Old Chest Key in order to open the chest containing the black heart.
After you reach Tacarigua, you need to head towards the Northern part of the isle, i.e. you need to get close to the entrance of the cave with the crystal portal inside. Around, you will meet Severin (you do not need to talk to him) and a number of monsters, e.g. Minions. After you have secured the area, find the Hidden Chest shown in the above screenshot and use the key to open it. From the chest, collect, first of all, the Raw Black Heart (200 glory points). Of course, it is a good idea to let Bones know that you located his stash and that you took the heart.
As far as the shaman goes, the person who can help the Nameless Hero is none other than the natives chieftain, Hirutu, living on the Kila Island. After reaching the natives village, you can talk with the mentioned chieftain (200 Glory Points) and ask him to help you. The shaman will confirm that he can help the main character.
Shaman Hirutu, besides the mentioned Raw Black Heart, requires the bones of an innocent being. The chieftain will suggest you to find an Innocent Monkey, and to kill it in order to collect its bones (Bone of an Innocent Monkey). You can look for monkey around the village, near the rope bridge leading to the village, or speak with Bahati, located in the village, in order to but the bones from her. After you've acquired the bones, go back to the shaman.
Hirutu can perform the black heart cleansing ritual infinite number of times, provided that you have the necessary ingredients to do so. Each time the shaman needs one Raw Black Heart and a Bone of an Innocent Monkey. It allows him to prepare a cleansed black heart (Black Heart) (200 Glory Points). Whether you want to consume the heart is all up to you - you will be given a bigger health bar (Blood), increased by 10 points and you will receive 2 negative soul points. I would recommend you to do so immediately - even if you plan on accumulating the positive soul points, losing only 2 of them by getting your health bar bigger isn't much of a problem.
Rewards for completing the quest:
- 400 glory points
