Have you just started playing Starfield and are wondering which of the dozens of backgrounds to choose? Our guide will help you with this.

Last update: 31 August 2023

In Starfield, you have to create your hero at the beginning of the game. In the character creator, you also need to select your background. Here you will find information about them and learn which one is best to choose.

What is the hero's background?

Our character's background is their history, but it does not significantly impact the further course of the story in Starfield. There are instances where you may hear references to the chosen background during a dialogue.

In Starfield, you can choose from 21 different backgrounds - each one provides 3 starting skills. So it's worth making a conscious choice, as you won't have to wait until you level up to get interesting abilities.

List of the best backgrounds in Starfield

Below, we have listed four, in our opinion, best backgrounds.

Diplomacy - this background grants skills in the Social and Physical categories, thus these are rather pacifist bonuses - Starfield: Which background to choose? - Character development and team - Starfield Guide

Diplomacy - this background grants skills in the Social and Physical categories, thus these are rather pacifist bonuses. This may appeal to people who will not focus on combat. Diplomacy provides:

  1. persuasion - the first rank increases the chances of success by 10% when the player tries to use persuasion on someone. In Starfield, it's not easy to persuade someone, so it's worth acquiring this skill.
  2. trade - the first rank allows you to buy items 5% cheaper and sell 10% more expensive;
  3. vitality - thanks to the first rank, the hero's maximum health is increased by 10%.
Space Scoundrel - provides access to extremely different abilities - Starfield: Which background to choose? - Character development and team - Starfield Guide

Space Scoundrel - provides access to extremely different abilities. These are some of the more useful bonuses that can be unlocked at the beginning of the game, specifically:

  1. pistol certification - you will come across pistols in the game very often, therefore dealing 10% more damage with this weapon (at the first rank) will certainly be useful;
  2. piloting - thanks to the first rank, you will be able to use the ship's maneuvering engines;
  3. persuasion.
Combat Medic - the skills provided by this background will satisfy players who pay the most attention to character health points during combat - Starfield: Which background to choose? - Character development and team - Starfield Guide

Combat Medic - the skills provided by this background will satisfy players who pay the most attention to character health points during combat. Choosing a Combat Medic you will receive:

  1. pistol certification;
  2. medicine - one of the more useful skills in the game, as it is associated with healing. The first rank makes first aid kits, trauma packs, and rescue kits restore an additional 10% health and work 10% faster.
  3. wellness.
Soldier - this background provides the first rank in the boost pack skill, which makes moving around the planets easier (without this skill, you can't use them) - Starfield: Which background to choose? - Character development and team - Starfield Guide

Soldier - this background provides the first rank in the boost pack skill, which makes moving around the planets easier (without this skill, you can't use them). In addition to this, thanks to the Soldier background you will receive:
