Starfield features ancient Powers to unlock and use, which we've described in our guide. You'll learn how to research anomalies and find temples, how to complete puzzles and how to unlock the most useful powers - Personal Atmosphere and Gravity Wave.
What are Powers in Starfield?
- Powers in Starfield can be compared to dragon shouts in Skyrim. They grant new active skills and attacks that can make gameplay much easier. You'll discover new powers by exploring temples hidden throughout the galaxy.
- You can only have one power active at a time, but you can freely switch between the ones you've unlocked. Powers must be activated manually (Z key). Each power consumes a different amount of energy, a blue bar under your white health bar. Energy regenerates on its own over time.
- Visiting temples hiding powers also reward you with lots of XP. Each visit should result in about 400 XP total.
How to unlock Powers?
- Powers are not available from the very beginning and must be learned about by progressing through the main storyline. Start the Into the Unknown main quest. Complete the objectives until you meet Vladimir. He'll task you with surveying an anomaly on Procyon III, in the Procyon A system.
- Find the anomaly on the surface and land there.
- After landing, you must find the temple using the scanner's distortions. Take out your scanner (F key) and start turning around until distortions appear. Go forward in a straight line.
- You can spot the temple marker or the tower-like temple itself to find it more easily.
- Eventually you'll reach the Eta temple. Keep using the scanner to find the temple entrance - it's always a long corridor with high walls.
- The entrance may be blocked off at first, but the way inside will open up once you get close enough.
- There's no gravity within the temple. Each facility features a simple puzzle - fly to the glowing clusters (example pictured). You can speed up your flight (SHIFT key) to get there more easily.
- The touched cluster will vanish, and another one will appear. If you don't make it in time, the cluster will appear somewhere else.
- Ultimately, the central circles will merge and something resembling a stargate will appear. Try to go through. You'll be stopped within the gate.
- You'll then be teleported outside the temple, receive 350XP and your first power, Antigravity Field.
- Display the character menu (TAB key). The Powers menu is at the top of the screen (pictured above - the tutorial text may be covering the button at first). You'll find the powers tree there, where you can switch between unlocked powers. Chosen power must always be activated manually (Z key).
- You can now start looking for temples to unlock more powers. First, complete the Into the Unknown main quest. You'll unlock the Power From Beyond quest, during which you'll get leads on more anomalies and temples.
Personal Atmosphere Power
- This power can be unlocked by visiting the planet Cassiopeia II-A in the Eta Cassiopeia system. It's rather far away, so make some stops at other systems along the way.
- Land by the anomaly and follow the scanner distortion to the Alpha temple. Complete the challenge inside and touch the gate.
- Personal Atmosphere is a power that immediately replenishes oxygen. As a reminder, your oxygen level is shown by the watch (bottom left corner of the screen, pictured above). Using this power immediately restores your oxygen to 100% and eliminates all negative effects caused by increasing CO2.
- Having this power lets you sprint for a longer time and use up oxygen more frequently. It's very useful when exploring maps or large cities with far-away objectives.
You'll learn more about monitoring oxygen on the How to increase oxygen supplies? page.
Gravity Wave Power
- You'll find this power on the planet Guniibuu II in the Guniibuu system. Jump to other systems along the way if possible.
- Locate the Beta temple using the distortions and solve the puzzle inside to unlock the gate.
- This power is very similar to the most iconic dragon shout in Skyrim - you can throw back enemies and knock them prone.
- Prone enemies are very easy targets. Use your strongest weapons to damage them as much as possible before they get up and rejoin the fight.
