In Starfield, all ships run on fuel known as He3. On this page we show how to increase your He3 capacity, and explain why it pays off to do so.

What is fuel needed for?

1. In Starfield, fuel is needed to perform grav jumps between systems.
2. After launching the Starmap and choosing a destination, a panel with information regarding the jump will appear on the right side of the screen. If you have enough He3, the jump will be possible. If not, you can plot the course to a closer system and make a few shorter jumps instead of one large one.
3. Over time, we recommend investing in additional He3 capacity, making longer grav jumps possible.
4. The fuel is replenished after each grav jump in space. This way, you won't get stuck in some system without a way out cause of lack of He3. In reality, fuel only determines the maximum possible length of a grav jump, and is used for nothing else.

He3 tanks

In Starfield, to increase your fuel capacity, you need to buy a larger He3 tank.

1. For this purpose, visit a Ship Services Technician. These officers are found in certain buildings in space destinations such as Akila, Neon, or New Atlantis.
2. After interacting with a technician, choose "I'd like to view and modify my ships".

1. You will be taken to the ship modification menu. After choosing a ship you want to upgrade, click on "Shipbuilder" and then 'add".
2. At the top of the screen, you'll see buyable upgrades from various categories. Choose "HE3 fuel tanks".
3. Buy and then install the chosen tank/tanks in the area marked with a blue circle. Remember that to have access to better tanks, you need to have a sufficient "Ship Builder" ability level.
4. The fuel capacity of the given tank can be viewed in a table on the left side of the screen - look for "maximum fuel".
5. Don't forget that installing a better/larger He3 tank can lower other parameters of the ship, such as mobility. Additionally, the overall mass of the ship will also increase.
