- This quest is the first mission of the UC Vanguard chain - one of 5 main factions in the world of the game. You can learn of the possibility of joining the Vanguard from passed NPCs or from Sara Morgan, a hero encountered during the main storyline. Alternatively, you can view the Activity tab in your journal - the information about the Vanguard may appear there.
- First step here will be to visit the Vanguard headquarters - this is the MAST building in New Atlantis on planet Jemison.
Registering in the Vanguard
- You can talk to the officer found in the lobby, but you'll be directed to the left, to the desk of Commander John Tuala. During the conversation, express interest in joining the Vanguard.
- Use the elevator to travel to the lowest floor of Orientation Hall. You'll find a terminal there - interact with it and confirm your willingness to join.
Proceeding to the Exam
- Along the way to the Exam area, you'll go past rooms with interactive exhibits.
- You can turn on the elements by pressing buttons. This is not a mandatory step in the recruitment process, but Tuala, at the end of the quest, may remark on how much time you spent learning the history of the Vanguard and Earth.
Destroying targets in the simulator
- You'll reach an elevator leading to the Exam room. In the room, you'll find Exam Proctor Samuelson. Talk to him about the simulator, approach it and sit in the cockpit .
- The minimum grade required to pass is awarded after defeating 3 waves of opponents. During the simulator session, focus on attacking one opponent at a time. Remember to use laser (LMB) to destroy shields, and then switch to ballistic missiles (RMB) or rockets (G/Y) to destroy the hulls.
- You can continue with the task after defeating the first 3 waves, with the simulation ending after 6th wave is destroyed. Waves 4-6 are clearly harder - expect high-level ships. These will test your skill - pay greater attention to avoiding enemy fire and monitoring the condition of your shields. If needed, repair the hull.
- If you are destroyed before completing the objective, you can leave the cockpit and approach the terminal to restart the simulation. You can attempt the exam as many times as you need, and later on you can use the simulator even after completing the quest (you'll receive XP and Piloting skill for this). You can leave the simulation and continue with the task soon after defeating 3 waves.
Conversation with Tuala and joining the Vanguard faction
- Return to the lobby to meet with Tuala again. The commander will summarize your achievements in the simulator and in the exhibit hall (fortunately, ignoring the exhibits will not lead to a negative result).
- Follow Commander Tuala. After the oath, you'll receive your trial mission - Grunt Work. Additionally, you'll be rewarded with XP and 4800 Credits.
