Background Checks is a Ryujin Industries faction mission. From this Starfield walkthrough, you will learn how to infiltrate the Ryujin skyscraper, how to sneak and avoid detection in the skyscraper, and how to reach Ularu Chen's computer with the Nyxa program.

Background Checks quest from Starfield may cause you some trouble, as in the main part of the quest, stealth and staying undetected are needed. Our walkthrough shows how to receive the program from Nyx, how to reach the entrance on the roof of the skyscraper, how to successfully sneak through Ryujin Industries building, how to upload Rover, and how to read the results of the investigation.

Initiating the quest and meeting with Dalton Fiennes

1. This mission, another one in the Ryujin Industries faction questline, becomes available after completing Top Secrets - this quest we describe on the previous page of the walkthrough.
2. First task is meeting Dalton Fiennes in Ryujin Industries skyscraper. During the conversation, you will learn of the plan of infiltrating the skyscraper. Dalton will additionally give you a special weapon that incapacitates targets instead of killing them - Novablast Disruptor. We recommend choosing it as active even before the sneaking part of the mission.

Meeting Nyx in Madame Sauvage's Place

It is easy to get lost in Neon, but the blue marker will lead you straight to Madame Sauvage's Place, which is your current destination. Step inside.

Nyx is at one of the tables, and there are 3 main ways of getting what you need:

1. Paying Nyx - you need to shell out 2,500 credits.
2. Applying Persuasion - a successful skill check (6 points) will lower the fee to meagre 1,000 credits.
3. Doing a favor for Nyx - the hacker will ask you to hack into an additional computer while infiltrating the skyscraper.

Regardless of the chosen approach, you'll receive the slate with Rover - a special program written by Nyx.

Getting into Ryujin Industries skyscraper

1. Leave the bar. You now need to reach the main entrance to the skyscraper to begin the infiltration phase of the quest. Again, we recommend following the readings of the scanner and blue quest marker.
2. You're going to have to climb the skyscraper. Reaching the button and pressing it will lower a hanging container (screenshot). Perform two jumps - to the container and to the remote ledge. After a while you'll reach a ventilation shaft which will transfer you to the skyscraper's interior.

Infilitrating the building

1. During your illegal stay in the building, you need to remain undetected, as guards will be hostile to you. This means that being detected will lead to an arrest attempt or being attacked by guards/robots. When that happens, you can use the incapacitating weapon from Dalton, use your lethal weapons, or escape.
2. Having at least rank 1 of Sneak will be useful, as you'll have access to information regarding the state of your detection (example in the screenshot). You have to prevent the bar from changing to full orange.
3. You can also equip camouflage that makes the hero partially impossible while standing still. We describe how to get camouflage and how to use it on the How to unlock camouflage? page.

1. We recommend keeping your Scanner equipped. With it, arrows will appear on the ground leading directly to your objective.
2. Take your time and wait for guards and robots to look the other way. When the coast is clear, sneak behind their backs. Do not break your stealth by attacking. The entire skyscraper section can be completed without any hostilities.

1. Your path through the halls of the skyscraper will include crossing a few ventilation shafts. Jump to them or use your jetpack.
2. Later in the quest, you'll also have to sneak above enemies (screenshot 2) - jump to a round balcony and then follow the narrow upper path.

Uploading the program received from Nyx

The next phase of the quest will involve hacking at least one computer:

1. If you paid Nyx for the program, you only have to upload the program on Ularu Chen's computer.
2. If you decided to complete a favour for him, you also need to upload the program on Camden Cho's computer.

In both cases, after interacting with the computer, choose Rover from the screen. You can optionally hack the computer, but this is not required.

Escaping the building

1. Fortunately, you don't have to sneak through all the rooms with enemies again. After uploading the program to Ularu Chen's computer, find the interactive hatch in the ceiling (screenshot above) - open it and go through the ventilation shaft to escape the skyscraper.

Meeting Nyx at his apartment

1. There are chests with loot on the roof of the skyscraper and it is worth collecting it. To get back to the ground floor, you can just jump and activate your jet pack right before hitting the ground, or jump to ledges below and reach the cargo elevator.
2. The blue marker will take you to Nyx's apartment and during the conversation, you'll hand over the Rover slate. Wait for the results of the analysis. You'll learn that Imogen Saizo is likely the mole and receive a encrypted slate.

Conversation with Dalton

1. You can now return to the main entrance to Ryujin Industries skyscraper and without any sneaking, ride to Executive Offices.
2. Give the slate to Dalton and wait for him to analyze it. Dalton will want to interrogate Imogene, and this will take place during the next task - Guilty Parties. For the successful mission, you'll receive XP, 10,000 credits, and 2 digipicks.
