One of the basic parts constituting a spaceship in Starfield is its reactor. On this page of our guide, we show how to unlock access to the best reactors that have the greatest power output. We also answer the question whether can you craft or modify reactors.
Visiting a Ship Services Techician
- In Starfield, reactors are not obtained/unlocked through research or crafting. For the purpose of acquiring one, you need to visit one of Ship Services Technicians, which are NPCs offering services such as upgrading, repairing, or buying spaceships.
- The easiest Technician to find is in New Atlantis - you'll encounter him right after leaving the ship.
- To enter the menu you're looking for, choose "I'd like to view and modify my ships" dialogue option.
- Next, you need to choose the ship you want to work with (Frontier - your first ship, or one of the bought ones) and move to upgrade menu.
- The reactors can be found in the final tab, but sometimes the order of parts changes. It may also be the case that for a ship of a given class (A, B, C), the Techician won't have any reactors in stock. The best chance of finding a reactor appears at Technicians from New Atlantis, The Key (Kryx) and The Den in Wolf system.
On a dedicated page (Locations of all Shipyards) you can find a complete list of all Ship Services Techicians in the galaxy, who offer, among others, new parts for your ships.
How to unlock the best parts at docks?
- Buying and installing a new reactor can pay off greatly, as thanks to better energy output, you get more power points to distribute between various ship systems. For example, you can reroute power to shields, engine, or individual weapon systems.
- Unfortunately, there are artificial barriers in the game that make buying a good reactor in the initial stages of the campaign impossible, even if you amassed a small wealth and can handle a large buy.
- Traders/Technicians will receive new additions to their stock as your character level grows. We recommend checking the Technician stock regularly (e.g. after advancing to 10, 20, 30 character level) and with time, better reactors should start to appear. In case of largest ships (C class) their dedicated reactors may offer even up to 35-40 power points.
