Starfield lets you establish relations with different factions from all across the galaxy, unlocking new quests, unique rewards and faction gear. On this page we explain can you join multiple factions at once and how to join the Constellation, Crimson Fleet, UC Vanguard, Ryujin Industries and the Freestar Rangers.
How to join a faction?
- Starfield features five main factions, all of which you can join - these are Constellation, UC Vanguard, Freestar Rangers, Crimson Fleet and Ryujin Industries.
- Joining a faction does not block access to other factions. You can work will all five actions at once, even though some of them have conflicting interests: for example, some quests pit you against the Crimson Fleet's pirates. You're never under any risk of bricking a faction's questline, though.
- The way to join a faction depends on which one you're joining, but usually you'll need to complete their intro quest first. This lets you continue their questline later.
- Belonging to a faction grants valuable rewards. Aside from experience and credits, you'll get unique weapons, faction clothes (such as a space sheriff outfit) and even free spaceships.
Constellation

- The Constellation is the most important star explorer faction. It's also the only mandatory faction, as finding artifacts and discovering the secrets of the galaxy for the Constellation is part of the main storyline.
- You'll first meet its members during the One Small Step main quest, an hour or two into the game. The faction's HQ is The Lodge in New Atlantis.
- There are important companions there - Sarah Morgan and Sam Coe. You can also treat this place as your own base. During your first visit to the Lodge you'll be assigned a room with a bed in it. Progressing through the main story also gradually rewards you with unique Constellation equipment.
UC Vanguard

- The Vanguard operates under the authority of the United Colonies. Their HQ is in the MAST building, in the city of New Atlantis, visited early on in the game.
- You can learn you can join them from random conversations between the passersby in New Atlantis, or from Sarah Morgan at the Lodge (Constellation HQ).
- Inside the MAST building, talk to the recruitment officer and ask about the job. The main character you'll need to meet is in the building lobby - Commander John Tuala. Letting him know you wish to join unlocks the Supra Et Ultra faction quest.
- You'll need to register in the system, learn about the United Colonies' past, undergo training in a flight simulator and accept the first full-fledged assignment. You'll start receiving unique Vanguard gear rather early on.
Freestar Rangers
Related map marker: The Rock @ Akila City
- The Freestar Rangers are interstellar marshals and bounty hunters maintaining law and order in the galaxy. They work for the Freestar Collective.
- You can contact them in the city of Akila, in the Cheyenne system. You can either fly there right away or wait until other major quests lead you there.
- During your first visit to Akila you'll witness a heist on GalBank, triggering the Job Gone Wrong faction quest. You must talk to Daniel Blake , offer help and resolve the crisis.
- Afterwards, Daniel will suggest you apply to the Freestar Rangers. Stay in the city and visit their HQ - The Rock. This starts another faction quest - Deputized.
- Meet Emma Wilcox in the building and let her know you wish to join the Rangers. She'll tell you to take a bounty off the mission board.
- Officially joining the rangers rewards you with the sheriff's badge and unique faction gear.
Crimson Fleet
The Crimson Fleet are space pirates, making a living on smuggling and crime. For obvious reasons, they're conflicted with other factions and their hideout is rather difficult to find.
Their HQ is The Key - a space station found in the Kryx system. You can't dock there right away. You must first complete UC's Deep Cover faction quest. We've described it in more detail on the How to join the Crimson Fleet? page. The most important steps are:
- Progressing through the Vanguard questline or being detected by a contrabanda scanner. Both cases start the Deep Cover quest.
- Completing the Rook Meets King quest. It's the Crimson Fleet's test, and if you pass, they'll invite you to their HQ.
- Some important Crimson Fleet characters are Naeva Mora and Delgado. The pirate leader may give you further quests tied to Kryx's Legacy.
- The pirates will also give you unique Crimson Fleet equipment. Importnatly, you can sell illegal items at their base - contraband and stolen items. You can also purchase contraband-concealing equipment for your ship there. We've discussed this in more detail on the How to hide contraband from the scanner? page.
Ryujin Industries
- Ryujin Industries is a megacorp in the city of Neon. Its questline resembles that of the thieves' guild in The Elder Scrolls series, as Ryujin quests often task you with breaking into areas, pickpocketing and planting evidence while remaining undetected.
- You can learn about the possibility to join Ryujin in the city of New Atlantis, early on in the game. In the residential area you'll find a kiosk where you can apply. Answer the employees survey however you please, you'll get hired regardless of how wrong or silly your answers will be. Submitting the application starts the Back to the Grind faction quest.
- You'll need to go to the city of Neon on Volii Alpha, in the Volli system. After landing in the city, locate the Ryujin Industries skyscraper .
- Your interview will be conducted by Imogene Salzo and regardless of your answers in the survey, you'll be employed for a trial period. You must first perform some trivial tasks and then start taking on assignments for Ryujin. You'll ultimately end up meeting some important corporate figures and getting unique faction gear.
