In Starfield, the player develops their character by unlocking new skills. There are quite a few of them, so you might wonder which ones to unlock at the beginning of the game. On this guide page, you will find our suggestions.
General information about obtaining skills
You receive one skill point every time you level up. You can spend it on an entirely new skill or to improve one you already have. Each skill has 4 ranks that enhance the basic ability.
To access a new rank, you need to first unlock all the previous ones for a given skill. To do this, you have to complete special challenges. Their progress can be seen in the skill menu.
All skill categories are divided into 4 sections - the lower the section is, the better skills can be found there. At the beginning, only the first ones are unlocked. You will gain access to the next ones if you spend the required number of rank points in a given category.
Best Starting Skills
Below, we have listed the abilities that, in our opinion, are best to unlock at the beginning of the game - that's why all of them were chosen from the first sections. You may have access to some skills earlier - it depends on the chosen background of your hero.
- Boost packs - if you don't unlock this skill, you won't be able to use boost packs at all. They are quite useful - using an jumping with a jetpack will make it easier for you to reach high places, which can be important, for example, during battles.
- Medicine - a skill from the Science category. It is worth investing in it, as it makes first aid kits, trauma packs, and rescue kits restore more health and work faster. All the more so if you prefer dynamic planet battles in Starfield.
- Persuasion - thanks to this skill, you will increase your chances of success when you try to persuade someone. Persuading characters at the beginning is not easy, so it is important to increase your chances.
- Theft - without this skill, you will not be able to pickpocket anyone. You can earn a few credits thanks to this ability, but only if you are lucky and make good use of the opportunity.
- Combat skills - at the beginning of the game, remember to choose at least one skill that will increase the damage of specific weapons. It is worth investing primarily in the "ballistics" and "pistol certification", as you will often encounter such weapons at the beginning of the game. However, if you prefer shotguns or lasers, you should improve your skills associated with them.
