Starfield: Best companion Starfield guide, tips

In the game Starfield, you can have many crew members with different skills. On this page of the guide we have listed the best companions, in our opinion.

Last update: 20 September 2023

Having a crew on your ship or a fellow to share the adventure with in Starfield is a good idea. You'll find characters willing to join forces e.g. in various bars or after completing some of the story missions. The companion can either be assigned to a ship or an outpost, or chosen as an active companion to help during combat and exploration. Below we have listed, the best, in our opinion, companions in the game and show recommended posts for them and whether they are suited for combat.

Sarah Morgan

Sara Morgan will join your team at the beginning of the game - all you have to do is follow the main storyline to recruit her - Starfield: Best companion - Basics - Starfield Guide

Sara Morgan will join your team at the beginning of the game - all you have to do is follow the main storyline to recruit her. Her skills are:

  1. Astrodynamics - rank 4;
  2. Lasers - rank 3;
  3. Leadership - rank 2;
  4. Botany - rank 1.

Sarah's skills make her a very useful companion for planetside combat.It is also worth assigning her to a post on the ship you're using, based on her high Astrodynamics rank.

Sam Coe

Sam is your active companion for the duration of The Empty Nest mission - Starfield: Best companion - Basics - Starfield Guide

Sam is your active companion for the duration of The Empty Nest mission. After the conclusion of this quest, he can become a full-time crew member. Sam's skills are:

  1. Piloting - rank 4;
  2. Rifle Certification - rank 3;
  3. Payloads - rank 2;
  4. Geology - rank 1

Like Sarah Morgan, thanks to his skills, Sam is a good choice for a combat companion or a crew member. With him being a crew member on an assigned post, you'll e.g. increase the cargo capacity of the ship.

Heller

Heller can be recruited to your team during Back to Vectera story quest - Starfield: Best companion - Basics - Starfield Guide

Heller can be recruited to your team during Back to Vectera story quest. Taking him on later is optional, but at the same time, there is no fee for him joining. Heller's skills are:

  1. Outpost Engineering - rank 3;
  2. Geology - rank 1

Although Heller doesn't have any useful combat skills it is worth assigning him to an outpost of choice.

Rafael Aguerro

Rafael has skills related to outpost management and engineering, and it is worth using him there - Starfield: Best companion - Basics - Starfield Guide

Rafael has skills related to outpost management and engineering, and it is worth using him there. His skills are:

  1. Starpost Engineering - rank 2;
  2. Outpost Engineering - rank 1;
  3. Outpost Management - rank 1.

Below we show how to recruit Rafael. Watch out - the description has main story spoilers.

You will meet Rafael Aguerro during Entangled story mission - it is a mandatory, storyline task, but you can easily block yourself from the possibility of recruiting this man. At the end of the task, you'll need to shut down a few lock switches. To save Rafael, you need to do this in the warped universe, and not in real world.

After successfully completing the misison, travel to The Viewport bar in New Atlantis. Rafael is found there - you can recruit him for free.

How to assign crew members to posts?

1 - Starfield: Best companion - Basics - Starfield Guide
  1. Companions can be assigned to a ship you're using or an outpost.
  2. In the menu, choose "Ship" and press "C" or "Y" (xbox).
  3. Choose an unassigned companion and assign him to the desired post.
  4. Please note that if you have your own Outpost and want to assign a companion there, you need to build a Crew Station in the outpost (Iron, Nickel and Aluminium). You can obtain the necessary resources during exploration or buy them from merchants, e.g. Neon Mining League.
