The Greedy Captain | Caldera II - Quests Risen 2 Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
Quest giver: Carlos [#1]
This quest is given to you by Carlos when you talk to him about the death of Captain Steelbeard (see: A New Ship). Your goal is to track down Captain Garcia, who has been last seen on Caldera. For this, follow the Following Garcia's Trail quest, which is described further in the guide (and below). When you complete it, you'll find out that the wanted corsair has taken refuge in the Maracai Bay (see: Maracai Bay). Find him, kill him and take the Thief's Bone Hand from him - it's an artifact that will allow you to kill Mara.
Caldera
Your goal is to find Garcia - the pirate who owns another Titan artifact. Though it seems easy enough, in truth it involves a whole lot of subquests you'll be forced to complete. Even the first one, Mauregato!, can be finished in two different ways, depending on the faction you've sided with. Leave the Crystal Fortress and go to Mauregato's house [#2].
If on the Sword Coast you have sided with the Natives, you can obtain Mauregato's Wig and use it to possess him. Go to the east part of his house and take the Claim ticket [#3]. Show the document to the merchant Pantaleo [#4] (if you don't have it, you can simply steal the Wig from him, as long as your Thievery is at least 75). Regardless of the chosen option, the item will be yours. Lastly, go to the second floor of the hotel and use Di Silva's altar [#5] to create the voodoo doll. With it, return to Mauregato and use your magic.
In the body of the grumpy politician, go to the cathedral [#6] and talk to Custodio [#9] there, who will inform you about a council meeting. Then, tell the man on your right, Puco [#10] how he should vote (for or against the alliance with Mara). Sneak into Mauregato's office [#11] to steal the Incriminating letter (you need to do it before going to the library!). In the library [#12] read the scroll with High Council Rulings - it will end the Following Garcia's Trail quest and start a new one - Maracai Bay.
If you want to finish the Mauregato! quest, enter Godin's office [#13] (opposite the reading-room) and tell him about the meeting. Meet with all the politicians in the main hall and carry out the voting. Unless you vote for the alliance with Mara and then reveal your treachery, the outcome of the voting will have no effect on the plot. Otherwise, you'll be killed and the quest will be cancelled!
If you want to disgrace Mauregato, steer the voting into not supporting Mara, and then admit to treachery. The man under your control will lose his position in favor of his opponent - Azuro.
If on the Sword Coast you have sided with the Inquisition, the Mauregato! quest will end the moment you talk to man in question. Since you weren't able to gain anything, ask the townspeople about Garcia (see: Follow the Servant). Thanks to that you'll be approached by the servant Azuro [#7], who will let you talk to his master [#8]. This opens the Errand Boy quest. It's divided into two subquests:
- Messenger's Attire - bought from Pantaleo [#5] for 500 Gold;
- The Signet Ring - has to be stolen from Mauregato's house [#2]. Get the Key to his bedroom (it lies in the room on the ground floor, and the cook Hermina carries another one on herself). Use it to open the door to the bedroom on the upper floor, and take the Signet ring off the table.
When you have both items, report back to Azuro. He'll give you a forged Pass which will allow you to enter the cathedral (put on the messenger's clothes first!). Inside, talk about Garcia to Custodio [#9]. This way you'll discover that the librarian Cassandra [#14] had talked with the pirate about books. Meet the woman, then (see: Scrolls, Books and Shelves), buy a key to Mauregato's office from her (costs 500 Gold) and steal the Incriminating letter from there [#11]. Next, enter the library itself (see: Access to the Archives) and read the scroll titled High Council Rulings. At that moment, the Following Garcia's Trail will end, and another one will begin - Maracai Bay.
Maracai Bay
When you arrive, a man named Valdez [#1] will stop you - he's the administrator of this area. No matter which dialogue option you choose, he'll give you new quests: The Expedition and The Hidden Valley. Complete them.
The first mission is simple enough - go to the Maracai village and talk to Corrientes. To reach it, circle around the temple from the west, and then use the path going south. If you took a companion with you (whichever), he or she will notice tracks on the ground - that's how you'll know which way to go. There will be plenty of Firebirds in your way - the first batch will attack you right at the temple [#2], and they will accompany you practically for the rest of your way. After you cross under a rope bridge (it's the only right way!) and go south, you'll have to fight Claw Monkeys which have claimed this area as their hunting ground. If you take a few steps towards the hill, you'll come across an old camp [#3]. You can sleep and regenerate your health here - you'll need it if you want to venture forth into the jungle.
When you're ready to go, turn east and pass an old temple [#4] (there is The Graves of the Ancestors quest inside). Turn right at the crossroads and head towards a lake [#5] (you can find Hanu there, who will give you The Beast in the Lake quest). Climb up the path where the Natives' camp is [#6]. There, talk to Corrientes, who can be found in a hut on the right. This is when The Expedition quest ends.
Completing the second quest is much more time consuming. There are two ways of doing it - and the choice has an influence over subsequent events. The first option is saving Angus [#7] (see: The Deserter) - if you take him back to Valdez and talk to the Inquisitor, you'll learn the true identity of Corrientes [#6] (see: Garcia's Masquerade Uncovered). When you next see him, the Nameless Hero will automatically draw his weapon and attack the impostor. Choosing this option is quite unfortunate because it means fighting with every one of Garcia's servants all at once - including the Natives which you'll have to stun (you'll kill the pirates, therefore cancelling their quests!). Since the battle is extremely difficult, don't forget to bring your companions along, and what's more, flee the village - you have zero chances while you're within its borders! Only when you get back you can try to lure your enemies, one by one, outside and take care of them there. Once you've dealt with them, kill Corrientes and take his Blood of the Ancestors - it will allow you to pass through the wall of fire (see: The Barrier of Flames). You don't have to do it, though - the Maracai Bay quest, together with The Greedy Captain, will end as soon as you kill Corrientes and claim his Thief's Bone Hand (one of the Titan artifacts).
The second option is talking to the shaman Osamu [#8]. When you report to him after completing the Secret Entrance Found quest and talking to Corrientes, the pirate's deception will come into light (see: Garcia's Masquerade Uncovered). The Native will give you the Blood of the Ancestors, which will allow for a pursuit. Your destination is a wall of fire [#9] in the cave south-east of the village. You'll have to fight with two of the pirate's men - Egas and Palomo. After you kill them, go through the magical barrier (sadly, you can't take your companions with you). There is a Ghoul to defeat on the other side, and a little further after him - a Grave Spider. In the location with the latter, turn 180 degrees, climb the upper level and approach the wall with the door forged in it. There is a button at the top which will open it. This passage will allow you to go back to the companions you had to leave in front of the flame barrier, and continue on with him.
Leave the cave by taking the corridor on the right of the Grave Spider. When you see the sunlight [#10], the present quest will be completed. Now you need to find Corrientes, hiding inside the fire temple [#11]. Watch out for Termites and Firebirds in the area when you try to enter it, but most of all - for the lethal trap set by the stairs [#12]. You'll meet the impostor inside the holy building. After a short movie, you'll have to fight not only him, but also a large group of Sand Devils. If you have a companion with you, he'll help you eliminate the pests, but the main foe is all on you. After you kill him, take his Thief's Bone Hand and the quest will be completed (together with The Greedy Captain).
Note! If the Thief's Bone Hand is the fourth (and the last) Titan artifact you've found, tell Patty about it. The girl will suggest asking Admiral Alvarez what next. Head for Antigua, then, and talk to him - you'll receive The Water Temple quest.
