The Cunning Captain | The Sword Coast - Quests Risen 2 Guide
Last update: 11 May 2016
Quest giver: Captain Steelbeard [#1]
The quest is activated after the completion of The Earth Titan quest, on the Sword Coast. A cutscene is triggered in which Captain Steelbeard is murdered by Mara, while his ship sinks in the depths of the ocean. Just before he dies, the poor pirate reveals his last secret to the Nameless Hero, and asks him to find the ship of Captain Slayne on the island of Antigua. To get there, you have to obtain a vessel - which is the goal of the mission called A New Ship.
Note! Because of the fact that this is one of the most complicated quests in the whole game, the description has been divided into the following several smaller parts. It should make the reading of the guide much easier and enable a satisfactory way to complete the game.
Rewards:
- 1000 Glory points for completing the game.
The Sword Coast
Quest giver: Patty [#1]
To get a new ship (quest: A New Ship), you need to complete several sidequests:
- Secure a water supply - can be done in two ways, depending on whether you've sided with the Inquisition (Golden Masks) or the Natives (The Puppet). In the first case, you need to help the innkeeper [#2] from the city acquire the treasures of Commandant Sebastiano (three golden masks are his garrison [#3]), and in the second - possess him through Chani's [#4] ritual and use his body to ask Miguel [#5] to deliver the merchandise.
- Assemble a proper crew - you can recruit the cook, Hawkins [#6], the soldier, Venturo [#2] or the shaman, Chani [#4] (depending on the chosen faction). It involves The Third Crew Member and The Fourth Crew Member quests.
- Destroy the cannons in the docks - if you don't do it, the ship's journey will be very short and painful. Sabotage is necessary. Damaging the cannons isn't difficult - ask Patty for Rusty nails and perform the work of destruction. The guns are on the coast [#7] and on the Inquisition's tower [#8]. Fighting guards is inevitable, so bring your companions along!
- Take over the ship in an open battle - this is the goal of the Liberate the Ship quest. You will have the support of your future crew members during the attack, so the battle won't be too difficult.
When all the above conditions are met, board your new ship and talk to Patty. This way you complete the quest and are free to sail to the island of Antigua, where you can meet Captain Slayne (quest: Find Captain Slayne).
Rewards:
- 500 Glory points for completing the quest.
Antigua
Following Captain Steelbeard's last will, you need to go to Antigua and convince Slayne to give you the second of the Titan artifacts. There are a few sidequest to complete before you can achieve that:
- Find Captain Slayne - finding the pirate is very easy - simply sail to Antigua and enter Admiral Alvarez's headquarters [#1], located just outside the city. When you step into this "friendly" abode, you'll witness an argument between the pirate leader and Captain Slayne. When you talk to the corsair, he'll lead you outside and show you the way to his ship. You'll learn pretty quickly of the sorry situation he has found himself in - he's missing most of the supplies needed to continue his journey. Getting those supplies is the goal of the Ship's Equipment quest.
- Ship's Equipment - a very demanding and complicated quest which will take a lot of time to complete. In order to get all the elements necessary for the pirate to embark on the journey, you need to complete the following sidequests.
- The Cannon - a quest from the blacksmith, Wilson [#2], which can be completed in two ways. If you're good at shooting, you can try to persuade the gunsmith Henri [#3] to compete in a sniping duel, and then buy his weapon back for 1000 Gold (quest: The Pawned Pistol). If you don't agree to such methods, you can help Wilson in his courtship of Grace [#4] by persuading her to give herself to him (for 1000 or 500 Gold, depending on your persuasive skills). The second way is the topic of the Pure Luxury quest. Completing one miniquest does not exclude completing the other - you can do both and thus gain more Glory points.
- Powder Kegs - you can complete this quest very quickly, provided you've properly developed the character of the Nameless Hero - to end the whole matter you only need to threaten Rick [#5] (Intimidate at 55). If you don't have the skill, try showing the warehouse master one of the three maps that can be found on the island - one is in Admiral Alvarez's chest [#6], the second can be bought from Quinn [#7] for 200 Gold, while the third you can get from Duncan [#8], as long as you save him in The Missing Fisherman quest.
- Water Barrels - the events of this mission depend on the faction you've sided whit on the Sword Coast. If you've chosen the Inquisition, you need to go to the water carriers and convince Butch [#9] that there is a treasure is hidden in a nearby cave (quest: Butch Has Got to Go). When you get there, beat him and then tell his subordinates to go back to work. If, however, you've sided with the Natives, you should cut a knot of his hair and make a voodoo doll for him at the shaman Emma's altar [#10]. After possessing the supervisor, order his men to load the water on board Captain Slayne's ship.
- The Helmsman - you can find the sailor Morgan [#11] in the port city's tavern. When you talk to him, he'll challenge you to a pirate triathlon. The competitions are: a sword duel, a grog drinking contest, and a shooting competition. If you succeed in at least two, you can count on Morgan's help.
- Fresh Fish - the least complicated of them all - simply talk to the fisherman Eddie [#12] at the fishing hut and help with the sea monster (quest: The Hobgoblin). Once you've dealt with the creature, the problem will be solved.
When you have all the elements necessary for the captain to leave Antigua, report to Slayne [#13] to tell him about it. On your way, you'll stumble upon a pretty furious Admiral Alvarez, but don't worry about him - he won't stand in your way anymore. The quest will be completed as soon as you report to the pirate. What's left now is to tell Patty about the location of Isle of Thieves and be on your way (quest: The Journey to the Isle of Thieves).
The Isle of Thieves
The second part of The Cunning Captain mission has an interesting turn. To move the events further, you need to complete the following quests:
- Treasure Cave - you receive this quest right upon arriving at the Isle of Thieves, when you talk to Captain Slayne [#1]. In a few words he'll explain that the land is inhabited by Gnomes - creatures nor particularly dangerous, but very annoying. Equipped with this knowledge, follow the captain (quest: Along the Beach), eliminating several Sand Devils and a Giant Crab on the way. When you reach the edge of the jungle, the pirate will stop to chose a further path (quest: The Way Up). Take care of another group of Sand Devils, and head towards an entrance to a cave where Termites are waiting for you (quest: The Cave Is Not Far Off). Once you enter the cave, the quest will be completed and another one will begin - Slayne's Treasure.
- Slayne's Treasure - the quest will begin the moment the Treasure Cave ends, which is upon entering the cave. Take a few steps forward until you reach a chest. Approach it to try to open it. A cutscene will be triggered in which Slayne decides to betray you by collapsing the entrance. Apparently, you have fallen into a trap. When the movie ends, the quest will be completed and the A Way Out of the Cave will begin.
- A Way Out of the Cave - after Slayne's betrayal in the Slayne's Treasure quest, you need to find a way out of the cave. To this end, take the corridor left of the chest you've just opened, and follow it until you reach a larger cavern. Here, you'll need to fight two Cave Bats. Afterwards, you'll come across a fork in the road. Turn right to get to a small room. A few items are lying on the table, and next to them there's a chest (requires Lockpicking at 40) and a bed (it's recommended to sleep in it to regenerate the Nameless Hero's health). When you wake up and loot the cave, go back to the fork and turn left this time. You'll face a Termite Worker. Behind it, there is another fork in the road. There are two Termite Workers and one Termite Warrior on the left - they're guarding a few items lying by the wall. The corridor on the right leads to a large cave where a gigantic Leviathan [#3] is lying in wait. The best way to defeat it is by standing on a slope and firing the shotgun, but it's also good to distract its attention (for example by using a parrot) and delivering a few murderous blows when the opportunity presents itself. When you get outside, you'll come across a few Sunken Ones - kill them all to fight your way to freedom. On the way, you'll find a Message in a bottle connected with The Treasure in the Cave quest. The mission will be completed when you can see the path leading from the beach to your ship [#4]. If you take a few steps towards it, it will turn out that the ship is long gone - it had sailed in an unknown direction. At this moment, the quest Marooned begins.
- Marooned - as you soon realize, your ship has been hijacked - it's nowhere in sight. Therefore, you have to leave the island and find your boat. This, however, won't be easy - the only intelligent species living on the island are gnomes who have a very unfavorable opinion. Head west until you reach a harbor, where you'll meet the first of them - Jaffar [#5]. The little slyboots turns out to be quite a friendly and helpful creature - he's biggest asset, though, is that he wants to leave the Isle of Thieves. Since you two share the same goal, you should join forces. Follow the little guy to his home [#6] and help him build a boat on which you'll escape this tropical paradise (quest: Build a Raft). To build it, you need to find: 10 items of Driftwood [#7], 5 Vines [#8] and 6 Shirts, which can be obtained from the gnomes' village (quests: The Thief Has Been Robbed, The Lost Gnome, and Lost in Translation).
- The Thief Has Been Robbed - talk to Zeki [#9], enter the termites' cave [#10] and take the Crown from there (naturally, you'll give it back).
- The Lost Gnome - after a conversation with Ulvi [#11], you'll be forced into helping save his friend from Threatening Giant Crabs [#12]. This heroic deed will get you the Pitch-black pearl, sought by Nuri [#13] (Lost in Translation).
- Lost in Translation - a simple quest in which you have to talk to Nuri [#13] (he doesn't speak human), and hand him the Pitch-black pearl from The Lost Gnome quest.
Once all the items required to build the raft are in your possession, report back to Jaffar [#6]. As soon as the gnome hears about it, the quest Meet Jaffar on the Western Beach is activated, in which you simply have to get to the little guy and leave the island. When you take off the shore and find yourselves on Tacarigua, the quest Where Is My Ship? will begin.
Tacarigua
There is only one relatively easy quest on Tacarigua. It's as follows:
- Where Is My Ship? - having arrived on Tacarigua with the help of Jaffar [#1], you can start looking for your ship. If you talk to the little guy, he and his weapons will join your party. He'll be quite useful in a fight with two Giant Crabs and an Alligator, which you'll face north of the beach you landed on. Further on, you'll arrive at a place guarded by four Ghuls [#2]. If you feel up to it, you can break through them to open a way to a chest holding the blade of the King's Sword (Lockpicking at least at 90). Head north until you reach another beach [#3]. Turn north again and defeat four Warthogs blocking your way. Continue on the same path, fighting every Claw Monkey standing in your way. Then, head towards the pirates' den where your ship awaits. The quest will be completed after talking to Patty [#4]. Now it's time for revenge - sail to Antigua to deal with Captain Slayne, whom you'll find in Admiral Alvarez's castle.
Note! If you don't have the patience to go through the jungle and fight the animals living there, you can skip that part of the mission. Simply use the map to travel to the key location of your choosing. Keep in mind, though, that you won't be able to collect Glory points you could otherwise obtain for eliminating enemies.
Antigua
- Meet Slayne at Blood Oath Square - when you arrive at Antigua and enter Admiral Alvarez's office [#1], you'll be a witness to Slayne's tirade on your particular subject. He'll declare you a spy of the Inquisition in front of the old man, which he'll be very shocked to hear. Luckily, you'll be noticed, giving you the opportunity to challenge the traitor to a duel. Move to the Blood Oath Square [#2] and defeat Slayne right there (quest: Showdown with Slayne).
- Showdown with Slayne - once you've managed to catch up with the traitor, you can finally get rid of him. Meet him at the Blood Oath Square and listen to what he has to say. When the madman's monologue ends, you can cross your swords. The fight with the cunning pirate isn't much different from any other. Slayne knows virtually all possible hits and moves, so he can be a little troublesome. Make use of Dirty Tricks which will distract his attention and help you land some blows. Remember that a duel is an honorable fight, so you won't be able to count on your companions' help - it's only you and Slayne.
When the enemy is defeated, the quest will be completed - together with the whole The Cunning Captain mission. After the fight you'll also obtain the Sacrificial Knife, one of the Titan artifacts necessary for defeating Mara. If you talk to Alvarez about your victory, he'll agree to teach you his fighting skill (he's a Fencer).
