STALKER 2: A Needle in a Haystack

The task A Needle in a Haystack is a small mission performed as part of a larger mission of the main thread. During it, your goal will be to activate the antennas surrounding Zalisje and locate a stalker nicknamed Cymbal.

While completing Behind Seven Seals, Gaffer and Richter will send you on a mission to find Squint, who stole important detectors. On this guide page, we will explain how to repair the antennas surrounding Zalissya as well as how to locate the thief and retrieve the stolen property from him.

Antennas activation

A Needle in a Haystack is intertwined with a larger quest: Behind Seven Seals. You can find more about that mission on a separate page of our guide.

To locate Squint's PDA, first and foremost you need to tune the surrounding antennas. Climb onto the tall antenna in the northern part of the settlement and activate the systems there.

After interacting with the radio, the updated mission marker will show you the location of the second antenna (to the southeast of the city). Go there.

Around the ruined brick building there are a lot of wild dogs and a patrol of armed guards. Be careful.

Climb to the roof of the building along the destroyed boards and turn on the antenna. The localized PDA signal will show you Squint's hideout.

Confronting Squint

Squint is hiding in the old mill, a little north of the antenna. Several four-legged mutants are hanging around the wooden structure.

Be very careful when going up the stairs. Squint set several traps for them. To disarm them, approach the rope and press the button displayed on the screen.

The frightened stalker will point a gun at you and ask about the purpose of your visit. At this point, you will have two options:

  1. You can kill Squint and loot Richter's stolen property off his corpse.
  2. Alternatively, you can help him obtain an artifact that will aid his escape.

Artifact from the cave

If you decide to help Squint, a side quest leading to one of the nearby cottages will appear in your journal.

In the building you will find the entrance to the cave system. Enter the tunnel.

In the vast cave, an invisible mutant similar to the one you fought in the prologue will attack you.

  1. Stand with your back to one of the walls so that the beast doesn't attack you from behind.
  2. Look out for an approaching, semi-transparent glow just before the attack.
  3. Try to aim for the monster's head.

After defeating the mutant, continue deeper into the cave until you come across a room full of poisonous puddles.

Take out your artifact detector and start scanning the area. Try not to step on any of the poisonous areas. When the detector indicates a location, an artifact should materialize in front of you. Pick it up.

Exit the caves via the ladder nearby. Return to the mill.

Give the artifact to Squint. The man will give you the detectors in return.

During this conversation, you can still change your mind and kill Squint, keeping both the artifact and detectors.

Returning to Richter

Return to the settlement and return the detectors to Richter. This will complete the mission related to Squint and allow you to continue the Behind Seven Seals quest.
