The Guardian is an enigmatic figure who watches over you. It is thanks to their intervention that your characters do not undergo ceremorphosis. It is related to the plot, and below you will find out how it can affect the game's ending.

Who is the Guardian?
The Guardian is a special character that you create when making your main character. This character will appear in many cut-scenes, and is also directly related to the artifact that Shadowheart possesses.
At the turning point of the plot, the Guardian will suggest your next steps, as well as encourage you to use the Illithid powers. Finally, at the beginning of act III, you will learn their identity.
The Guardian's identity
The Guardian is a rebellious Illithid, who is called the Emperor. He broke free from the influence of the Netherbrain and is helping you in defeating it.
The choice of their appearance ultimately does not matter as at some point the Emperor will start appearing as an Illithid. What matters in your relationship with the Emperor is your attitude towards him.
You can be suspicious and distrustful of the Emperor, which will allow you to discover his secrets. Alternatively, you can fully trust him and even start a romance with him - it's very simple, just choose the most friendly options and eventually the possibility of romance will appear.
The Guardian's fate
In the final scenes of act III, you will have a choice - you can give the Netherstones to the Emperor to help you in battle, you can transform into an Illithid and use them yourself, or you can free Orpheus, thus betraying the Emperor.
If you decide to turn into an Illithid or give the Netherstones to the Emperor, he will be on your side as a party member in the final battle. However, if you free Orpheus, the Emperor joins the Netherbrain and will be your opponent.
