This page of the Baldurs Gate 3 Game Guide provides information on how to perform long jumps and what's the use of jumping. You learn about this mechanic in the prologue, but it has different applications throughout the game.
Most important use for jumps
- Reaching seemingly inaccessible places - Look for higher or lower shelves and platforms that you can't reach by default. Using a jump or step-down can open an alternate path to the destination. In some locations, you can also discover secret areas with valuable treasures.
- Easier approach or distancing yourself from opponents - You can use jumps to reach archers, mages, and other long-range characters, or to negate their height advantage. Jumps are also helpful for escaping from melee-oriented enemies. Standing on a high shelf will hinder or prevent them from reaching the character.
How to use the Jump action?
- The Jump action is available for all party members. You don't have to unlock this skill by developing characters and you can use it throughout the entire game. The game will even require you to make a jump during the prologue taking place on the Nautiloid ship.
- Jump is one of the so-called Bonus Actions. You can select it from the command bar at any moment, i.e. when exploring the world or during a fight. In the turn-based system, jumps are performed within a given turn regardless of the main action.
- The maximum range of the jump depends on the Strength ability. The higher its value, the further you can jump with a given character.
- When planning the jump, the character must land in the white circle. Choose a sufficiently large shelf or platform. The game may refuse to execute the command if the chosen landing spot is not a stable, flat surface.
Don't plan to jump down from too high, even if the game allows it. That character may receive fall damage.
Jump as a spell
- In addition to the action described above, there is also a spell called Jump. This is a level 1 spell form the transmutation school.
- The spell triples the range of the jump. After choosing this spell, you must touch the character who is to receive the bonus. This is useful if a hero's Strength does not allow them to jump far enough. The spell remains active for 10 turns.
