Before you start playing Baldur's Gate 3, you may wonder what is the maximum level that can be achieved by each party member? We've explained the game's level cap. You'll also learn how noticeable the power spikes on level ups are in BG3.
What's a character's level cap?
- Baldur's Gate 3, just like the previous installments, is based on the tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons. This means that the characters level up very slowly. You won't gain dozens or hundreds of experience levels.
- The level cap in BG3 is Level 12. At the end of Act 1, your character should be at about Level 5-6. You'll only reach the level cap near the end of the game, and only if you've gained plenty of experience.
- A low level cap means each level up makes the character much more powerful. Their stats will increase noticeably, and they can also gain access to useful skills or spells, which can hugely impact your playstyle.
- Previous installments of Baldur's Gate featured similarly low level caps. In BG1, you started at Level 1 and could reach up to Level 8. The starting level in BG2 was 9, and the maximum level was 20.
- It's still possible the characters could level up further in the future, for example, in a BG3 DLC or BG4 by Larian Studios, featuring an option to transfer over your progress from the third game.
