What happens after death in Rise of the Ronin? Our guide explains what can be lost when the main character dies and whether there is a mechanic available to recover lost progress.

Do you lose XP and progress in Rise of the Ronin after dying? On this page, you will learn what are the consequences of your character's death. We described how the karma works and how to use it, as well as how the vendetta on the opponent who killed you works.

Death in the game

The circumstances of your death matter:

1. If the hero was killed by an opponent (and the character could not be revived by a companion), you will lose unused karma and activate the Vendetta mechanic - both of these topics are described in the following subsections.
2. If the hero died due to the player's fault (e.g. after falling from a great height), you will not receive any punishment.

Regardless of the circumstances of your death, your character will respawn at the last checkpoint or the nearest Veiled Edge Banner.

How to spend karma?

1. Karma is the points awarded for defeating enemies. The karma bar is visible in the upper right corner of the screen under the experience points bar.

1. The karma bar has a limited capacity. After it is filled, the accumulated karma will not be spent immediately.
2. You must complete a mission or reach and interact with any banner in the game world. The game will then display a message about performing a karma conversion (example in the picture). You will receive skill points and only then will the acquired karma be spent.

How does Vendetta works?

1. The Vendetta mechanic allows you to regain lost karma.
2. The game will mark the opponent who killed you on the world map. Go there.

You can regain karma in 2 ways:

1. By killing the enemy who killed you.
2. By performing a critical hit on this enemy. The opportunity to use this attack may happen during the fight - a red icon must appear after breaking the opponent's stance. Then press Triangle to use a strong critical attack.

You only have 1 chance to regain your karma. The second death means you will lose it forever.

1. Later in the game, you can also obtain a rare consumable item called Jizo Surrogate (picture above).
2. Sacrificing this item allows you to regain karma without having to complete the Vendetta. We recommend saving these items for later, for example, to regain a large amount of karma from an exceptionally strong boss.
