Last update: 28 March 2024
During the main story of Rise of the Ronin, you will have to make important choices which can lead to wondering whether the game has various endings. This guide page compiles all endings, as well as describes the limitations related to influencing the fate of the shogunate and 19th-century Japan.
The page contains spoilers about the structure of the main campaign and, above all, the last important choice from the game's finale.
- The shogunate and the fate of Japan
- Final important choice - game's ending
- Can you replay the finale and change the ending?
The shogunate and the fate of Japan
- In selected main missions, you may experience important choices - examples include sparing or killing Gonzo or sparing or killing Naosuke Ii.
- The campaign in Rise of the Ronin is designed in such a way that important choices can only modify the hero's adventure or the availability of new allies. Your decisions cannot change the fate of the shogunate or all of Japan. The game tries to remain consistent with historical events. You can experience the fall of the shogunate governments in the Bakumatsu era, the end of the samurai era, and the transformation of Japan into a more modern state.
- The built-in encyclopedia allows you to learn about key historical events - the most important moments in Japanese history are chronologically arranged. Additionally, for example, at the end of the main chapter, the game may display a cinematic summary of the events that occurred "in the background".
- Game choices allow you to improve relationships with opponents or supporters of the shogunate - the faction mechanics are described in more detail on the Important choices and factions page. By helping a given group, you can gain various benefits, but you will not make this faction play a significant role in the conflict and be able to change the historical course of events.
Final important choice - game's ending
The only important end-game choice is regarding the Blade Twin. During the game, you will find out that the Blade Twin survived the battle on Matthew Perry's ship. All subsequent encounters are hostile - you will face the Blade Twin several times as a boss.
After winning the final battle against the Blade Twin, you can make a final decision:
- kill the Blade Twin,
- spare the Blade Twin.
Each of these variants will show a different ending for the Blade Twins' storyline.
Can you replay the finale and change the ending?
- After watching one of the endings, you don't have to play the entire game again to see the second ending. Upon arrival in Edo in chapter 1, you have unlocked the Soul Testimony mechanic - we described it in more detail on the Important choices and factions page.
- Soul Testimony allows you to repeat all completed missions, meaning you can make different story choices. You can repeat the final battle with the Blade Twin and choose the other option.
