Last update: 01 April 2022
On this page of the guide to Dying Light 2, you can find a walkthrough of the main quest X-13. The solution below contains, among others: how to find the entrance to the tunnel, how to reach X13, where to find Waltz and how to catch him, how to defeat Waltz - the final boss, and how to choose the ending of the game.
Rewards for completing the quest
- XP - combat: 5500
- XP - parkour: 5500
- Melee weapon (Heavy Duty)
- Weapon Charm (E3 2019 Biomarker)
Find the tunnel entrance
You only receive your first mission objective after the cutscenes.
You must go to the western part of the Garrison district. The area marked by the game is a search zone but you don't need to worry about finding the way forward. Aiden will start transforming soon after and red footprints will appear on the screen - follow them.
You'll eventually reach the tunnel entrance pictured above you must enter. You'll see some new flashbacks on the way.
Get to X13
You'll regain control of the protagonist in a different area. You must head towards the marked entrance to X-13. You can get there in any way you want but watch out when you jump off the damaged highway, it's easy to get seriously hurt or just straight-up die from falling.
After reaching the partially raised gate crawl underneath it. In the tunnel you can eliminate the enemies with your monster mode or go past them.
The entrance to X-13 is clearly visible and pictured above. Jump over the destroyed part of the viaduct, crawl under the gate again and reach the marked elevator.
Join Lawan
After the cutscenes wait for Lawan's response - only then will the side passage in the tunnel open, letting you examine it.
You'll witness the Renegades fighting the infected. After joining the fray focus on fighting the enemies that are a bigger threat at the moment. After the encounter progress further to meet Lawan.
Kill the renegades
The next battle begins after Lawan is shot with an arrow. Thankfully your beast mode will activate in the middle of the fight which will let you easily dispatch all the Renegates.
After the encounter check up on the wounded Lawan.
Find Waltz
Volatiles will appear in the area and you can't eliminate them easily as Aiden can no longer transform. Sneak past them while using your survivor sense to track their movements and stay out of their lines of sight. You must reach the passageway pictured above (B02 Medical).
The trek through the medical section is filled with flashbacks which aren't interactive. There are some collectibles here tied to Aiden and Waltz's past but getting them is optional.
After Aiden transforms again you can keep following the red footprints left by Waltz.
You'll encounter yet another group of Renegades you need to dispatch in any way you wish.
After the battle you'll notice Waltz running away and sending more thugs after you. Kill them as well.
Chase Waltz
Go through the newly unlocked corridors. After spotting Waltz in the room nearby go downstairs. Open the door to finally catch up to Waltz.
The dialogue options you choose here don't affect what happens next. Regardless of your answers you'll face Waltz in one final boss battle.
Waltz: final boss - first phase
Get ready for a very long final confrontation. The duel with Waltz consists of four phases which means you must deplete his health bar almost down to zero four times.
The battle begins in a circular arena. You can:
- Push the boss off the arena with the Bash skill.
- Fall off the arena yourself after getting hit by one of Waltz's powerful blows. Falling off the platform can hurt Aiden but climbing back up isn't too difficult. You must climb the construction next to the arena while Waltz patiently waits for you.
Waltz's moveset can be divided into three different groups. The first one consists of regular melee attacks. You can block them, parry or dodge.
The second group consists of strong AoE attacks. These include ground pounds or spin attacks. Regardless, you must react appropriately and jump back to avoid getting hit.
The boss can also generate shockwaves which ripple through the floor in a straight line. To avoid them you must jump to the side at the right moment. Waltz can chain several shockwaves at once, usually executing a 4-6 hit combo. Dodging aside in a correct rhythm should let you survive unscathed.
After missing the shockwaves the boss will rest for a moment, which is a perfect time to hit him. You should look for other opportunities throughout the battle as well, sneaking in a hit or two when it's safe.
You can fight Waltz with any weapon you wish, and obviously the stronger the weapon and the more additional traits it has (such as fire or poison damage), the better. If you wish to fight from range, with a bow or a crossbow, you must be aware that Waltz can dodge your shots. You won't be able to hit him every time, even if you're accurate.
Waltz: final boss - second phase
Completing each phase of the fight triggers a cutscene or a conversation. Waltz will fully replenish his health bar.
The most important difference between phases is that phase two takes place on the lower floor, the one you could fall to during phase one. The new arena is covered in steam hindering your vision.
In the second phase Waltz will add surprise attacks to his moveset - he'll charge at you from far away. To avoid damage you must dodge perfectly to the side right before he can hit you.
The rest of his attacks are very similar to those from phase one. Try to tell blockable/parriable attacks and unblockable attacks aside, as the latter can only be avoided by dodging backwards or to the side.
Waltz: final boss - third phase
The third part of the duel with Waltz starts after a short conversation. Waltz will start running away from Aiden and wait for him at designated spots.
This phase of the fight puts your parkour skills to the test. You must rely on the environment ( bars, yellow ledges) to reach the platforms Waltz awaits at. Prioritize precise jumps and gripping onto objects.
Each time Waltz takes enough damage or when enough time passes he'll jump towards another platform.
During your clashes against him make sure to avoid his strong attacks as they can knock you off the platforms. This can seriously hurt you or just straight-up kill you. In addition each time you fall the battle will take longer, which is very inconvenient given that you must watch out for your immunity meter as well.
Waltz: final boss - fourth phase
The final part of the battle is also the easiest one. Aiden transforms into a monster letting him perform very far jumps to the platforms Waltz awaits at. Don't even try to parkour, make sure you land correctly each time you jump.
After landing quickly hit the boss before he jumps away again. Soon enough you'll finally drain all his health and kill him.
Ending selection
When you defeat Waltz, you'll see a long cutscene that shows the confrontation between him, Mia and Lawan, who wants to detonate the bombs. Wait until you can make an important choice that will affect the ending:
- Ending 1: Let Lawan detonate the bombs - left dialogue option.
- Ending 2: Saving Lawan - the correct dialogue option.
Ending 1 - Let Lawan detonate the bombs
The first ending of Dying Light 2 will start when you agree to Lawan's suicide mission - she will plant explosives under the bombs and detonate them to prevent the city from being destroyed.
Go to Mia's bed and pick her up. This will activate a longer cutscene from that will end Dying Light 2.
Ending 2 - Save Lawan
In the 2nd ending you will stop Lawan from detonating the bombs in a suicide mission. This will also cause the city to be destroyed due to missile attack.
If you want to choose this option, you have to confirm it again by selecting the right dialogue option.
A timer will start - you have less than 2 minutes to get to Lawan. Start running and combine it with parkour - jump to the yellow elements around you.
After reaching the rocket silo, you have to start climbing the upper balconies. We have drawn the initial part of the climb in the picture above - you have to start by grabbing the vertical yellow pipe, then jump to the first rocket, then to the middle ledge, then to the second rocket and finally to the higher balcony.
At the end of the climb, jump to the bars that stick out from the silo walls.
Now all you have to do is run up to Lawan to start the first of many cut-scenes that end the game.
