Unlocking the first bow
Unfortunately, the ability to obtain a bow appears further along the main story. For the first few hours of the campaign, you will mostly have to make do with various types of melee weapons, and throwables (knives or Molotov cocktails).
The first bow is a reward for completing the main mission, Let's Waltz!. If you focus on completing the main story first, the quest will take place a few hours after the game started. This is a transitional quest that moves you from the first to the second part of the city.
After completing the said task, the Pipe bow will automatically appear in your inventory. You can put it in one of the active weapon slots to start using it.
Later in the campaign, you should, of course, look for other, better bows - offering better bonuses to statistics and dealing more damage. You can also unlock skills related to ranged combat in order to increase the effectiveness of this type of weapon.
Arrows
Completing the mentioned main quest (Time for Waltz!) also unlocks the arrow blueprint . You need scrap and feathers to craft them.
Alternatively, arrows can be found in loot - look for them in the locations you visit.
There are more than one type of bow arrows in the game, such as burning, electrocuting, poisoning or infecting opponents. You can visit a craftmaster and buy their blueprints. Initially, only Fire Arrows will likely be available. More variants will appear in the craftmasters' offerings as your character levels up.
Getting better bows
We recommend waiting with getting a new bow until you reach rank 5. After reaching that level, you can start visiting traders. Their offer may include a Paper Clip artifact bows, which has very good basic statistics (112 or even higher damage). Try to get such a bow - it can really help in eliminating most enemies with a single shot (aim at their heads) and weakening stronger enemies faster.
You can also find new bows as you progress through the main storyline. You can get a better bow than the one described in the previous point, e.g. by visiting Lawan's apartment in The Shoe main quest. The bow will lie on one of the furniture.
Increasing the bows' effectiveness
After getting a good bow, you can make it even more effective in two main ways.
The first way is to unlock bow skills. They are located at the bottom of the Combat tree and they allow, for example, to zoom in while aiming and to make stronger shots that pierce the targets.
The second way is to wear Ranger clothes with bonuses for ranged weapons. The more items of this type you equip (in different armor slots), the higher the total percentage bonus (e.g. 20% instead of 5%).
Unlocking the crossbow
Obtaining a crossbow is unfortunately very problematic, as it is one of the rewards associated with the city alignment. We have described this topic on a separate page - Factions and city alignment.
In order to unlock the crossbow (Crossbow Pack), you need to get 4 alignment points for the Peacemakers faction, so give them any 4 structures (water towers, electrical substations). If you've already handed over 4 or more structures to Survivors, you may miss the chance to obtain the crossbow.
You will also get bolts blueprints. You can also find bolts in the game world as loot, although they are quite rare.
The crossbow can be a very effective and powerful weapon, especially if you aim at the heads of your opponents. Its additional advantage is that, unlike bows, you do not have to pull the bowstring and wait a second or two before firing a stronger shot. You can fire a bolt right away - this is very important for direct fights where quick response is essential.
