On this page of the Dying Light 2 guide, you will find a list of the main types of monsters. We explain the circumstances under which individual monsters can be encountered, what are their unique abilities and attacks, and how to deal with the infected.
Biter
They are the most common type of monsters in the game, and you will often encounter them throughout the campaign. Biters are slow and tend to grab the main character and bite him. Single monsters of this type do not pose much of a challenge. However, you have to watch out during battles with larger groups because the main character may get surrounded.
You can attack the zombies with all available means, but be careful when a monster catches Aiden. Then quickly press the indicated button to free the hero and avoid being bitten.
Viral
Virals can be classified as running zombies, and unlike the standard enemies described in the previous paragraph, they can climb roofs and ledges. You can't hide from them in some higher place.
You can encounter Virals mostly while traveling at night - they can appear near Aiden after starting the chase. You can also confront them, for example, when exploring dark locations.
When fighting Virals, you have to consider that they are very agile - they can launch quick attacks and go at Aiden (make a quick dodge to the side to avoid being knocked down). Try to attack them one by one. You can also use a UV flashlight to temporarily repel the zombies, making it easier for you to escape or to attack them when they are vulnerable.
Howler
You can encounter the Howlers at night as they walk the city streets city at that time. Their characteristic feature of this opponent is a yellow growth on the torso, and the game additionally marks them with a special icon on the screen. If the Howler notices the main character, his scream will alert the area and start the chase (we have described the chases on a separate page Chase - how to end? ).
You can reduce the risk of alerting Howlers by traveling with the flashlight off or simply keeping a safe distance from them. It is also possible to kill them with surprise attacks, e.g. if you have a good bow or Smash skill. They are not strong monsters in direct fights.
Goliath
Goliaths are large types of infected that can be additionally equipped with powerful melee weapons. You will fight Goliath several times during the campaign (for the first time in The Arrival main quest ), but you can also encounter them while freely exploring the map. You can find them, for example, near military convoys.
The most important advice about Goliaths is that they are only dangerous in close combat. You should try to attack them from a distance, using bows, crossbows, throwing objects (e.g. mines, grenades) and objects you can find (e.g. red cylinders and spears). In the case of a direct fight, you have to dodge backward before each Goliath's attack. They can deal a lot of damage.
Spitter
Spitters are monsters that spit poisonous projectiles, as the name implies. Each hit can take precious health points of the main character. You will fight Spitters in selected quests and optional locations. Additionally, they can be one of the infected species found on city streets when traveling at night.
You can use ranged weapons to attack Spitters (e.g. a bow). If you plan to deal with them in close combat, rely on dodging while running towards the monster you plan to kill with a melee weapon. This will allow you to minimize the damage before the actual hand-to-hand starts.
Volatile
In our opinion, they are the most dangerous monsters among all the main ones appearing in the game. Volatiles are a deadly threat to Aiden, but fortunately, they appear less often than in the first part of Dying Light. You can confront them:
- In selected quests - They appear in the initial main missions, but the first direct fight takes place in the VNC Tower during the main Broadcast mission.
- In selected night locations visited during the day - These are mainly GRE Quarantine Buildings. If you do not want to encounter Volatiles, explore such locations only at night after most of the monsters have left them.
- On higher levels of the chase - the Volatiles should start appearing after the chase is at least level 3.
The Volatiles can kill a hero very quickly in close combat or after they make a successful jump towards Aiden. You can stop the Volatiles with a UV flashlight so that you have more time to escape or attack back. It is best to attack them from a distance using a bow/crossbow (try to aim at the weak point on the chest) and throwing objects (e.g. Molotov cocktails). In most situations, however, we recommend escaping to the nearest location with UV lighting.
Revenant
Revenants are unique types of infected that only appear in locations known as anomalies and only after dark. You will not meet them if you visit the anomaly during daylight.
Revenants are monsters characterized by high mobility - they can move efficiently around the arena, which can make it difficult to eliminate them with melee weapons. However, the better way is to use a bow - it's best to position yourself outside the anomaly area and attack the Revenant from a distance. This technique will also allow you to avoid the monster's ranged attacks and the regular zombies accompanying the Revenant.
Exploder
You will encounter the exploding variants of the infected for the first time while completing the Broadcast main quest. They act like suicides - they deliberately explode after they get close to the main character. Later in the campaign, you may also encounter Exploders, e.g. while exploring some parts of the city.
A fairly obvious solution to the problem of exploding zombies is keeping them at a distance and using ranged attacks to kill them. A bow and crossbow will work best here, but you can also use, for example, spears or grenades. You can also try to run away because they are not very fast.
