Dragon Age Veilguard: How to give commands to companions? Dragon Age Veilguard guide, walkthrough

Cooperation with companions is one of the most important elements that build gameplay in Dragon Age Veilguard. From this page of the guide, you will learn how to give them commands in and out of combat.

Last update: 31 October 2024

Your character travels with companions right from the beginning of Dragon Age Veilguard. They will support you during fights with enemies and in solving various puzzles. On this page of the guide, we explain how to give orders to your party members, as well as how to use their unique talents while exploring and solving puzzles.

How to give commands during combat?

During combat, you can use the special abilities of your companions. To do this, activate the skill radial menu (TAB on the keyboard and R1/RB on the controller), then use the cursor to select the skill you are interested in. Companion skills are located on the left and right sides of the screen. Remember to choose targets - you can switch between them. Strengthening or healing skills will automatically be cast on you.

Appropriate management and selection of skills is very important, because many of them can complement each other. If the game detects two or more abilities that then do a combo, it will notify you about that in the skill menu. Select a highlighted option and the arrow will show you the suggested combinations.

Character skills, just like yours, have a cooldown activating after they are used. Keep this in mind and strategically choose the best time to use a given ability.

How to give commands outside of combat?

Besides their combat abilities, companions are also useful during exploration. Each of them has a different talent. For example:

  1. Bellara can activate ancient elven artifacts;
  2. Neve has the ability to analyze the clues;
  3. Lucanis activates spectral platforms above some chasms.

When you come across an object that requires help from a companion, a skill radial menu icon will appear next to it. Open it and then select the icon on the top bar. The companion will get to work and a moment later will complete the task.

After recovering the magic dagger in one of the first chapters of the game, you will also be able to summon companions that you do not currently have in your party. You give them commands in the same way. This option allows you to avoid the hassle of "juggling" party members when discovering new areas.
