Last update: 05 November 2024

Like many RPGs, Dragon Age Veilguard allows you to thoroughly customize your hero. On this page of the guide you will learn what options and modifications are available when creating a new hero. We will present the available races, classes, factions, appearance options as well as predefined difficulty levels.

Lineage

The first tab you'll see when you enter the character creator is Lineage. It concerns the race of the main character. You can choose one of 4 options:

  1. Elf - heirs of an ancient civilization;
  2. Qunari - humanoids distinguished by their strength, size and horns on their heads;
  3. Man - the most numerous of the races, know for their ambition and ability to adapt;
  4. Dwarf - stocky and strong craftsmen who cannot use magic.

Your choice of race affects how NPCs perceive you and may determine some dialogue options. Each race can also choose any class. The exception are dwarves, who cannot take on the role of mages.

Appearance

The second tab is a detailed editor of our character's appearance. The player can choose one of the predefined appearances for the previously selected race or make a detailed configuration of the hero's body parts. Options available for configuration include:

  1. Head;
  2. Body;
  3. Eyes;
  4. Nose;
  5. Mouth;
  6. Ears;
  7. Hair.

Each of the above features can be adjusted using a series of sliders and options. You can also give your character tattoos, scars or face painting.

Once you've defined your character's appearance, you can determine their gender and what pronouns NPCs will address them with.

Class

Another important choice awaits you in the Class tab, where you will define the profession of your main character. Here you will choose from 3 archetypes, each of which is additionally divided into 3 further specializations. These are:

  1. Warrior with Reaper, Slayer and Champion subclasses;
  2. Mage with Death Caller, Evoker and Spellblade subclasses;
  3. Rogue with Duelist, Saboteur and Veil Ranger subclasses.

Faction

The selection in this tab determines the hero's story background, their past and some dialogue options. Additionally, representatives of specific factions have access to special abilities and skills. The available choices are:

Grey Wardens - an ancient order fighting monsters and the forces of darkness. Their unique abilities are:

  1. Blight Killer - increased damage against Darkspawn;
  2. Vigilant Training - base health and defense stats are slightly increased.

Veil Jumpers - a group of explorers investigating ancient elven ruins. It consists mainly of elves and their skills are as follows:

  1. Attuned Strikes - increased damage against Fade-touched;
  2. Keen Eye - increased critical and weak point damage.

Shadow Dragons - an underground resistance movement fighting corruption and slavery in Tevinter. The abilities of organization members are as follows:

  1. Never to Rise - increased damage against Venatori;
  2. Resourceful - class-related resource regenerates slightly faster.

Lords of Fortune - an informal group of adventurers from Rivain. Their characteristic abilities are:

  1. Healthy Competition - increased damage against mercenaries;
  2. Relentless - taking down enemies is slightly easier.

The Mourn Guard - an order of necromancers who study the relationship between life and death. Their abilities are:

  1. Return to the Grave - increased damage against demons and the undead;
  2. Acute Afflictions - allows you to apply an additional affliction effect on enemies.

Antivan Crows - a mysterious organization of assassins lurking in the shadows. Their abilities are as follows:

  1. Open Contract - increased damage against Antaams;
  2. Hidden Pouch - additional potion slot.

Additionally, each faction receives a bonus of accelerated reputation building with representatives of the same group. For more detailed information on the starting factions, see the Starting Faction page.

Playstyle

Playstyle is nothing more than difficulty levels. Here they are, easiest to hardest:

  1. Storyteller;
  2. Keeper;
  3. Adventurer;
  4. Underdog;
  5. Nightmare;

The additional Unbound option allows you to customize the level of difficulty for each aspect of the game. It concerns both combat and exploration.

Finish

In the last tab, you can finally give your protagonist a name, choose a starting outfit, select one of the available voices and adjust it.

The special Past Adventures: The Inquisition option will take you to the next hero creation screen, where you can create a hero from the previous installment in the series, Dragon Age Inquisition. You can specify:

  1. Inquisitor's Appearance;
  2. Love interest;
  3. The further fate of the Inquisition;
  4. Solas's fate.

The Inquisitor creator is completely optional and will appeal to series veterans who wish to recreate their decisions from the previous game. These will have a fairly minor impact on the events of Veilguard and will mostly involve minor references to characters or events.
