The Last Gambit is a main quest in Dragon Age Veilguard available in chapter 13. This is the second of three major battles you will encounter after the point of no return. On this page of the guide we have described who to assign to what tasks during the battle of Minrathous, how to find Solas and save Neve or Bellara.
- Who should be assigned to what tasks during the battle of Minrathous?
- How to find Solas?
- How to free Neve or Bellara?
Who should be assigned to what tasks during the battle of Minrathous?
Before the battle, you will need to hold a council. To get to the city you must complete three tasks. You must assign one companion for each of these tasks, who will be unavailable for the rest of the mission. Depending on your choices in the previous quest, two companions will be unavailable - Davrin or Harding died in the fight with Ghilan'nain, and Neve or Bellara were kidnapped by Elgar'nan.
Failure in the task will result in casualties - faction leaders and even the companion themselves may die. Success in the task will ensure that there will be no casualties among important characters. To be successful, three factors are important - the factions helping the companion in the quest must have a high level of power (three stars - this means completing most of their side missions and selling valuables to them), the companion must have the Hero of the Veilguard status (obtained for completing their personal storyline) and be suitable for the assigned task.
The tasks are:
- Disarming magical defense systems - the companion is supported by the Veil Jumpers. The chosen companion should have experience in defending others or dispelling magic. The best choices will therefore be Bellara, Neve and Emmrich.
- Assassination of the Venatori commander - the companion is supported by the Antivan Crows and the Lords of Fortune. The chosen companion should have experience in fighting mages or stealth assassinations. The best choices will therefore be Lucanis or Neve.
- Destruction of the defense construct - the companion is supported by the Grey Wardens and the Mourn Watch. The companion you choose should have experience fighting constructs or giant enemies. The best choices will therefore be Taash and Davrin.
Two companions that you have not assigned to any task will support you in infiltrating the city. Once you are satisfied with your choices, confirm them to proceed to the battle of Minrathous.
How to find Solas?
After a long cut-scene you will reach the streets of Minrathous. You must find Solas and take the dagger from him. The path forward is linear and filled with Darkspawn and Venatori. Pay attention to the mission objective below the mini-map - if it's not to kill all enemies, you can simply sprint past enemies to proceed. Once again, the biggest threat comes from the emissaries, flying Darkspawn that can grab you with a long tentacle, limiting your mobility.
After a cut-scene showing the Crows fighting the Venatori commander, climb onto the wooden scaffolding and continue forward, watching out for enemies along the way. Solas is nearby. In the cut-scene you will form an alliance - Solas will temporarily join your party.
Continue along the linear path. Solas is a powerful ally, capable of single-handedly taking down hordes of enemies. With his help, cutting through enemy hordes shouldn't be a problem - most of the Venatori you encounter are weak to ice, which Solas is very fond of using. At the end of the path, you will split up - Solas will start fighting the Archdemon Elgar'nan, and you will have to destroy the plague tentacle blocking access to Archon's Palace. This tentacle is held by either Neve or Bellara, depending on your choice in the previous mission. You must free your companion.
How to free Neve or Bellara?
Immediately after splitting up with Solas, ignore the horde of enemies and head down the nearby escarpment to the square nearby. To free your companion, you must defeat the plagued mech.
The fight against Elgar'nan's Wrath is almost identical to the previous fights against these mechs. They can still spin (parry their attacks) and open their mouths for ranged attacks (a precise shot at the exposed core will stun them). Watch out for the Venatori mages on the sides of the arena and fight the mech as before - approach it from the side when it uses its laser attack, as it is completely immobile during it and can only shoot forward.
Defeating the mech will complete the quest. Before the final battle, you’ll find yourself in a safehouse where you can talk to any surviving companions and faction members, pay your respects to the fallen, and make final purchases and upgrades from Isabela and the Caretaker.
