Dragon Age Veilguard: Can you change gender? Dragon Age Veilguard guide, walkthrough

Have you changed your mind about your character's gender in DA Veilguard? This guide page explains how gender works in the game, whether you can change it later and how the mirror works.

Last update: 08 November 2024

Gender doesn't make much of a difference in Dragon Age Veilguard - there are basically no gender divisions in Thedas. However, there may be times when you wish to change your gender identity in the game. On this guide page we explain how choosing a gender works, what the difference is between gender and pronouns, and whether you can change your gender during the game.

Gender and pronouns

You will choose your character's gender and pronouns at the very beginning of the character creator. You have three options to choose from:

Gender:

  1. female,
  2. male,
  3. non-binary.

Pronouns:

  1. she/her,
  2. he/his,
  3. they/them.

You can choose both options independently of each other, for example your male protagonist can refer to himself with the pronouns she/her. Gender has basically no impact on gameplay, but your choice of pronouns affects the way NPCs address you. It's worth mentioning that your character's appearance is also completely unrelated to gender and pronouns.

Is it possible to change gender later in the game?

The answer to the question is - no. The decision on gender selection is final. The game does not offer the ability to change your identity or pronouns. You can only change the character's appearance to make its expression closer to that of a woman or a man. You can also change your voice, but neither of these things will affect how NPCs perceive or address you.

How does the small mirror work?

You obtain this item early on in the game - it will be available in your room in the Lighthouse, the same one where you talk to Solas. Using the mirror, your character will begin to recall their past, and at some point they will be able to decide whether or not the character has ever transitioned. Choosing a transgender identity will unlock additional dialogue options in subsequent conversations throughout the game. Interestingly, this option is also available if you choose at the beginning of the game that your character is non-binary. However, this will not affect the ability to change gender in the game - this remains unavailable.
