Key information about traders
There are several dozen traders in the game world, whom you can find primarily by visiting the factions' headquarters. This way, you can come across various traders. Importantly, they're not marked until you talk to them. Only then will the game add the trader icon to the map that will make it easier to find them again.
While exploring the game world, you may also come across a Traveling Merchant, whom you can use to replenish your supplies without needing to return to any city. He may also offer some valuable items. From the moment you meet this merchant for the first time, his current location will be shown on the map.
The game allows you to steal from traders, but it is risky:
- If you want to rob the merchant himself, you must have the Pick Pocket skill. This method is very risky, and the items the merchant has in their pockets differ from those offered in the store.
- If you want to rob the store, you have to sneak and avoid being detected by other characters.
In both cases, you can increase your chances of success by stealing at night. Also, remember to save the game before any attempted theft.
Additional hint - Merchants can buy stolen items, even those that you stole from them a moment earlier. The stolen goods are not marked in any way, and the merchant will not recognize that it is his equipment.
Unavailable trading option - why?
When you try to talk to traders or faction members, it may happen that a trader or faction representative will refuse to show their offer to Jax. There are two main reasons for this:
- You must first earn the trust of members of the community by showing a big enough engagement in their quests. This problem concerns i.a. the Morkon faction; we discussed it in more detail on the page Grotto - how to unlock traders?.
- The merchant's offer is reserved for members of a given faction and cannot be accessed by people from outside the faction. You must first try to join a given faction (it's enough to obtain the lowest rank of a faction member).
The main types of traders
During the game, you can encounter traders with a diversified offer (General Trader / Supplier) - weapons, armor, ammunition, recipes, potions, blueprints, lockpicks, jetpack fuel or food.
You can also look for merchants that specialize in specific types of items. These mainly include:
- Arms Dealer - They can offer a variety of good melee and ranged weapons.
- Armorers - You can buy higher-quality pieces of armor and headgear from them.
- Spare Parts Traders - They can sell e.g. scrap and other popular crafting materials.
- Thieves - They can mainly sell lockpicks.
- Bartenders and cooks - They sell mainly different varieties of food and drinks.
Selling unnecessary things
Merchants can buy your unwanted items from the inventory, and to sell them, you have to go to the second tab in the trade window. Here, you don't need to sell specifically to the trader associated with the category of items you want to get rid of. All merchants will accept them.
Make sure you don't get rid of too much, though, because many things may be useful in the later stages of the game. This primarily refers to potions and crafting materials, but you should also keep e.g. damaged weapons, because there you can combine them at the workbenches to create better variants. Jax's inventory is unlimited, so you don't have to worry about overfilling it.
How to lower prices at traders?
You can unlock the Haggler skill, but it requires you to visit the appropriate trainer, for example Chloe from the Fort. Buying both levels of this skill requires a sufficiently large number of intelligence points and cunning.
Each level of the Haggler skill lowers the prices by 5%. In case of cheap items this isn't a huge difference, but many valuable items from later stages of the game (e.g. unique weapons) can cost several thousand or over a dozen thousand elexit. Then, the 5-10% price difference is very noticeable.
