Basic lockpicking information
Progressing through the game you may encounter locks, mostly on various chests. They can't be destroyed by force, only with appropriate skills and gadgets.
You should learn how to pick locks as soon as possible, as locked chests often contain valuable loot. Until you learn how to pick specific locks you should remember the locations of locked chests or add your own markers to the world map so that you can easily return to them after developing Jax's skills.
Lock Picking and Locksmith skills
Two of Jax's skills are related to locked containers found in the game world. The first is Lock Picking. As the name implies it lets you pick locks, although you should know this ability has three levels - they let you pick easy, medium and hard locks respectively.
Unfortunately you won't be able to unlock all the levels early on, but you should still at least get the first one so you can pick easy locks. You should also remember to upgrade your Dexterity and Intelligence to at least 15 when you level up.
The second skill is Locksmith. It stops your lockpicks from breaking, making the lockpicking process much easier. Unfortunately its requirements are high (50 Intelligence and staggering 75 Dexterity) so you'll only be able to unlock it later on if you focus on upgrading these attributes.
Skill trainer - Gardok
You can find a lockpicking trainer very early on. Said trainer is Gardok who can first be found in a hut, in a village east of the Bastion, as pictured above.
You'll meet Gardok during the Preparing the Bastion main quest, so he's impossible to miss. After providing him with necessary supplies Gardok will move to the Bastion, still available as a skill trainer.
Obtaining lockpicks
Lockpicks can be obtained in two main ways: You can, obviously, find them as loot.
You can also buy them from traders. One such trader is Smith, found in western Carakis soon after starting the game.
Lockpicking mini-game
You can only trigger the lockpicking mini-game if your Lock Picking skill is high enough. If you've only upgraded it to Level 1 medium and hard locks will remain unaccessible.
The mini-game requires you to move the pick to the left and to the right, interacting with the bolts to find the correct combination. You can make it easier by saving before triggering the mini-game to spare yourself some lockpicks and make it easier on your second try.
