General combat tips
Understanding how the world of Elex 2 works will help you fight and survive. The following tips are only an introduction to the extensive in-game combat - detailed advice can be found further down this page.
- The creatures and characters in the game world fight both the player, and each other. You will often see traveling merchants fighting monsters, or two creature species fighting each other. You can use this to your advantage, e.g. by luring the enemies to the guards at the city gates. This is an easy way to get rid of these enemies, but remember that it won't grant you any experience points.
- Watch out for the mines - they are small, but easily recognizable by their red glow. When you approach a mine, it will explode, so it's best to destroy it from a distance, e.g. with a bow. The game also features red barrels. They also explode, but only after being hit. It's best to shoot them from a distance and use them against your enemies.
- Particularly dangerous enemies are marked with a skull icon. This means that you probably won't be able to defeat that enemy at your current character level.
Melee combat - blocking, dodging, Stamina
Melee combat in Elex 2 has been simplified, compared to the previous part of the series. There aren't any punch sequences anymore - the whole thing is based on Stamina. Sprint, as well as all hits, blocks and dodges use up the yellow Stamina bar. When your Stamina drops to zero, you won't be able to do any of these things. Stamina regenerates on its own even during combat, so to succeed, you need to manage its level accordingly. Keep an eye on the Stamina level - if it's about to run out, try to retreat from the fight a little to allow it to regenerate.
The Stamina bar also applies to enemies - you will see it under their health bar. The enemy's and the player's Stamina work the same way. Keep an eye on the enemy's bar as well, and when it drops to zero, attack the enemy with a hit combo - they won't be able to block your punches or dodge.
There are many skills that support close combat. If you fight mainly with melee weapons, check out the following perks:
- Melee Weapons - increases melee weapons damage.
- Melee Weapons Specialist - reduces the requirements of melee weapons by 10%, which means that to use a given weapon, you can develop the attributes to a lower level.
- Backstab - sudden attacks from behind deal double damage. Useful only when you base part of your combat on stealth.
- Stamina - a permanent increase in the level of Stamina used for hits, blocks, dodges and sprint.
- Stamina Regeneration - speeds up the automatic regeneration of Stamina.
Ranged combat - types of weapons, useful skills
Ranged combat in Elex 2 is another way to eliminate enemies. You will encounter some flying monsters, too so make sure you always have at least a basic ranged weapon with you. You can choose from:
- Bows, crossbows, throwing weapons - these provide high damage with medium rate of fire. When you shoot, you have to remember about the projectile's trajectory, which makes ranged combat more difficult.
- Shotguns - their range is low, but the spread can hit multiple targets with one shot.
- Energy Weapons - these have the highest rate of fire in the game, but deal less damage than bows or crossbows.
- Heavy weapons - they deal very high AoE damage but have a long reloading time.
- Grenades - they deal AoE damage (less than heavy weapons). They don't have any attribute requirements, but due to their low availability, they serve as an accessory rather than the main weapon.
Ranged combat does not use the Stamina bar, but each ranged weapon requires ammunition - you can find it in the game world, buy it from traders or craft it yourself. If you fight at a distance frequently, you should unlock some of the following skills:
- Ranged Weapons - increase damage dealt by all ranged weapons (except heavy ones).
- Ranged Weapons Specialist proficiency - reduces the requirements of ranged weapons by 10%.
- Energy Master - increases damage dealt by energy weapons.
- Powder Master - increases damage dealt by shotguns.
- Projectile Master - increases damage dealt by bows, crossbows and throwing weapons.
- Heavy Weapons - increases damage dealt by heavy weapons.
- Heavy Weapons Specialist - reduces the requirements of heavy weapons by 10%.
- Grenades - increases the damage dealt by grenades.
Fighting with a jetpack - how to unlock?
By using a jetpack, you can attack your enemies from above - both with melee and ranged weapons. Naturally, the fuel bar is the limitation. You also need to buy the Floating skill at the Jet Pack Bench.
More information about the jetpack can be found on a separate page of the guide: Jetpack.
Magic - how to unlock spells?
Magic in Elex 2 is not available from the beginning of the game. You can unlock spells only by joining the Berserkers or Albs . If you join the Berserkers, you will have access to the mana bar (refilled with potions) and fire spells. Albs, on the other hand, use the Elex bar (which is renewed after consuming Elex) and ice spells.
Don't know how to join a faction? Check out this page of our guide: Factions.
Health regeneration - how to heal?
Understandably, you will lose some health points during combat. Therefore, you should know what are the best ways to heal in Elex 2. The method available from the beginning of the game is eating food. You will find a lot of food through exploration, while killing creatures will give you meat - remember to roast it over a fire to remove the poisoning effect. The fastest way to heal is to drink potions - some of them even restore the full health bar. Using the bed also regenerates health, but you can only do so after a fight, not during combat.
Check out the skills that increase your overall HP number, or speed up regeneration:
- Extra Hitpoints - rewards you with more HP each time you level up.
- Health Regeneration - speeds up automatic health regeneration.
- Good Eater - food heals 50% more.
- Armor - reduces the damage you take.
Resistance and negative effects
Combat in Elex 2 comes with various types of negative effects applied during attacks - they can be applied to you and your opponents alike. Some weapons deal additional damage from poison, fire, ice, and electricity. Some monster hits can also cause negative effects. To remove negative effects, drink a potion called General Remedy. You can also reduce the impact of negative effects by unlocking the Resist All skill.
