This page of the guide to Elex 2 explains whether you have to repair damaged weapons or armor, and whether Jax's gear can wear down after fights.
Does the gear in the game wear out?
Elex 2 is quite demanding, and you have to take care of many things related to the protagonist's development, increasing his combat capabilities and generally keeping him alive; there's also good news, though - weapons and armor in the game are indestructible, i.e. they won't become damaged over time.
You can use any gear you find for the rest of the game, and the only motivation to stop using it is finding something of higher stats.
Found damaged weapons - what to do with them?
Throughout the game, you can find items marked as Damaged along with other loot - the picture shows an example of a damaged melee weapon.
You can use the damaged items, but remember that they will have lower statistics.
Try to find other items of the same type. When you collect at least 3 identical items, you can visit one of the crafting stations (there are different ones, e.g. for melee weapons and ranged weapons). This will allow you to make a higher quality item by "sacrificing" the three damaged ones. The picture above shows that 3 damaged shotguns were used to create 1 higher quality shotgun.
The better item you made has the same requirements in terms of Jax's stats. Moreover, you can use the crafted better equipment without the need to further develop your character (assuming that Jax was able to use the damaged items).
The method described above has one serious limitation - you must have the Build Weapons skill. You can unlock its first level practically at the beginning of the game by visiting trainer Smith in western Carakis and paying for his first training.
The next two levels of the Build Weapons skill, unfortunately, require you to develop Jax's attributes, which will allow you to make higher quality gear, which will be useful in the later stages of the campaign.
