This page of the Elex 2 guide lists the best starter skills to unlock early in the campaign.
Last update: 18 March 2022
This page of the guide to Elex 2 contains a list of the recommended skills to buy early in the game. Exploring these skills can be helpful in combat, exploration, crafting, theft or other unique activities.
To unlock the skills from the list below, you need to meet with trainers and pay for their services. You can find a list of trainers on a separate page - Skill trainers - in our world atlas.
The list below does not include faction-related skills, only those that are "neutral" and don't apply to any faction. Factions will become important later in the game.
- Melee Weapons
- Ranged Weapons
- Armor
- Stronger Potions
- Extra Hitpoints
- Stamina
- Lock Picking
- Build Weapons
- Pickpocket
- Create Ammunition
- Chemistry
- Hack
- Attribute Points
- Retrorockets
- Additional Tank
Melee Weapons
This is an important multi-level skill that will increase melee damage. Even if you plan to attack with magic and ranged weapons, it is still worth investing at least 1 development point, which will significantly improve the damage of the weak weapons found early in the game.
Ranged Weapons
This skill is similar to the one above, except it increases the damage dealt with long-range weapons. Unlocking at least one level of this skill will allow you not only to attack enemies from a distance more effectively, but also to use less ammo to kill a single enemy.
Armor
This skill consists of three levels, and each subsequent one increases the level of protection provided by the armor. As a result, it can reduce the damage you take and thus increase your chances of staying alive, especially during fights against stronger enemies.
Stronger Potions
This skill can increase potion effectiveness by 25%. You will appreciate this especially when using potions to restore Jax's health, but remember that potions have other uses as well.
Extra Hitpoints
Subsequent levels of this skill can extend the main character's health bar by adding more hitpoints. This way, you will be less likely to suddenly die, especially you're under attack from elite enemies who can take away a lot of your hitpoints with one attack.
Stamina
You should remember both about your health bar and stamina. Having more stamina points will allow you to e.g. perform more attacks at a time; sprinting and dodging will also be safer. Make sure you unlock at least the first level quite early.
Lock Picking
You need to buy this skill to unlock lockpicking. Try to buy the first level very early so that you can break into the easy locks, but then try to get to the second and third levels, too, because then you won't have to ignore the chests with higher-level locks.
Build Weapons
The main advantage of this skill are its very low requirements, which make it available to unlock very early in the game. It allows you to craft weapons - initially, only basic weapons will be available, but purchasing additional levels of the ability will unlock the option to craft higher quality weapons.
Pickpocket
You should consider buying this skill if you want to get new items by pickpocketing, which is not available by default. Pickpocketing is a risky process, but you can limit the risk by frequently saving the game and gradually buying new levels of this skill.
Create Ammunition
This can be a very helpful skill if you want to use long-range weapons. It unlocks the option to craft ammunition. Unfortunately, you also need to obtain blueprints needed e.g. to make arrows. Blueprints are required as much as ingredients.
Chemistry
This skill allows you to craft boosters and potions, which may include e.g. healing potions that eliminate negative statuses or ones that provide a one-time XP bonus (Elex Drink). You need recipes to make potions, just like blueprints to craft ammo.
Hack
You need to get this skill if you plan to hack into various devices. We recommend getting this skill early in the game, because you can find locked safes quite early, and the lack of this skill may prevent you from opening them (unless you find a note with a code nearby).
Attribute Points
This is a multi-level skill, thanks to which you can get free attribute points - 10 points for each unlocked level. This can be very helpful in the initial phase of the campaign and give you faster access to the better weapons you receive or find.
Retrorockets
This is one of the jetpack upgrades. Skills from this group allow you to install charges that soften your landing. It can save your life if you suddenly run out of fuel mid-air and start falling.
Note - Jetpack skills do not require finding a trainer. All you need to do is use the Jetpack Bench, one of which can be found in the Bastion.
Additional Tank
This is a key skill in terms of extending the jetpack flying time. It adds an additional fuel tank to the jetpack. This skill is worth unlocking, because it will allow you to use the jetpack in many new ways to explore the game world.
