The game always informs you that you have obtained additional experience points and/or ability points

Watch_Dogs has an in-built system of experience points. Experience points are awarded to you, mainly, for completing main and side missions but, you can also obtain them, among others, by losing a police pursuit or by eliminating the opponents. Each time that you have collected the required number, Aiden is promoted to the next experience level (the limit is level 50) and receive one, or several, ability points. You can spend these points to unlock new skills , which have been described, in detail, on the next page of this guide.

Note - in the case of the abilities of higher levels of the abilities tree, apart from collecting the points, you may need to progress to the specific mission in the game's storyline, or to complete a certain side mission. You can leave the points for later and wait until the abilities that you want, finally become available, or buy the other upgrades, which are available without these restrictions.
