Silage can be a good business in Farming Simulator 22. On this page, you will learn how to make silage, where to sell it, and how biogas plants work.
Usage
The use of silage is primarily as food for cows - silage is a component of a total mixed ration, guaranteeing 100% of the productive and reproductive efficiency of cows. However, silage alone is sufficient for optimal animal maintenance.
The second use of silage, often more important, is to sale it in a biogas plant. Besides the fact that you will receive quite a lot of money, you will also get digestate - a free, natural fertilizer for your plants. You can only get digestate from your own biogas plant.
How to make silage?
There are two methods of making silage - wrapping grass bales and placing grass (or chaff) in prisms.
You get chaff by cutting the plants with a forage harvester with the right header. Chaff yields are very high.
Bailing and wrapping
You can read about wrappers and bales on the next page of the guide, which deals with this issue in detail. In a nutshell:
- You can turn mown grass into a bale using a baler,
- Some balers have wrappers that wrap bales with foil,
- There are also special wrappers for wrapping bales, including rectangular,
- After waiting a month or two, the grass inside the wrapped bale will turn into silage - you can use it to feed the animals and sell it at the biogas plant. You can see the silage status when approaching the bales - it will be on the bottom panel on the right.
Prisms
You need to build prisms. Inside them, you need to scatter grass or a chaff and tamp it. You can see the level of tamping and prism loading in the help panel in the upper left corner. It is worth spreading it evenly over the surface of the prism. You can't break up bales of grass to spread them out in prism - you can only wrap them up.
You can scatter the grass by using levelers. You will not be able to tamp too large piles, so this tool is usually useful only when working on a large scale.
Then you start tamping. The game offers rollers that are supposed to help you in this task. Personally, however, we recommend using a tractor with two weights and wide wheels. You must keep tamping the contents of the prism until it reaches 100%.
Now it's time to cover the prism. After reaching 100%, approach the prism and press the action button to cover it. Now wait 2 months.
After two months, you have to uncover the prism. You can finally collect the silage you've made! To do this, use a shovel or special silage forks connected to the loaders. However, you can also use the usual forage wagon.
Even if you are going to use a forage wagon, first use the loader shovel to completely remove the cover from the prism - the forage wagon cannot do this.
Selling silage
The silage must be poured into a container located at the biogas plant. You don't have to own it just to sell the product. But if you don't have it, you won't be able to get digestate.
If you sell silage or natural fertilizers in your biogas plant, you will still receive money. Here, however, you will receive income every hour, as in the case of other plants.
Please note that not every biogas plant on the map:
- Accepts the same products,
- Has prisms (if they do, you can only use them after purchasing a biogas plant).
The biogas plant looks like a factory. In the Production chains panel, you can check the amount of stored goods, turn the factory on and off, or see how many raw materials of a given type are processed per hour.
