The following page describes how to obtain chaff, what harvesters to use, and how much you can earn from it in Farming Simulator 22.

Collecting chaff

Chaff is formed as a result of processing the harvest into chopped fragments. In this way, you lose the entire crop from the field - however, chaff is valuable and this "loss" can bring quite a lot of benefits. Chaff can be stored in prisms and processed into silage - you can sell it in a biogas plant to receive money. If you have a biogas plant, you will additionally prepare digestate from the silage, which you can use later to fertilize your fields. Detailed information about silage can be found on the page: Silage - obtaining and usage.

You can also make silage from grass. However, chaff guarantees a much larger harvest from one hectare.

By default, you collecti it with a forage harvester which have their own category in the store. However, these machines are expensive and require you to purchase headers. The model of a forage harvester will only affect the power of the machine: the size of the header and the trailer that it will be able to pull (a large and full trailer can affect the further pace of harvesting).

Forage harvesters do not have their own tank - you need to attach a trailer to them that can store chaff. A good idea for large fields is to use the loading trailers available in the Sugarcane technology category. They allow you to transfer the contents to another trailer by lifting up the basket. However, they have one drawback - they make a forage harvester less maneuverable by limiting the degree of turns.

Chaff harvesters for tractors

Another method of harvesting, for the undecided or the less well-off, is to use a small harvester attached to a tractor.

This is Lacotec LH II which you will find in the shop tab - Farming Simulator 22: Chaff - obtaining and selling - Grass, hay and silage - Farming Simulator 22 Guide

This is Lacotec LH II which you will find in the shop tab. This device works exactly like a full-fledged forage harvester, but:

  1. You'll need a very powerful tractor,
  2. You must mount the trailer to the rear or have another vehicle driving next to it,
  3. Don't count on employees for this job,
  4. You need an additional header included with the Lacotec LH II - it can be any of the smallest headers,
  5. Be sure to attach a weight to the rear of the tractor with an option to attach a trailer,
  6. The work will be slow and maneuvering difficult.
We suggest a strong, heavy tractor for this work. - Farming Simulator 22: Chaff - obtaining and selling - Grass, hay and silage - Farming Simulator 22 Guide

Profitability

Chaff can be very profitable. The most profitable plant in this case is corn. It offers the production of chaff at the level of 100,000l/hectare. After taking proper care of the field and fertilizing it, you can even have twice as much harvest. The amount of silage will be the same as the amount of chaff(optionally increased by 5% after using headers for a forage harvester). The optimal price of silage is about 300€ (average economic difficulties), which gives a profit of 30,000 - 60,000€ per hectare.
