Farming Simulator 22: Fertilizing FS 22 guide, tips
On this page you will read about fertilizing fields in Farming Simulator 22.
Last update: 06 December 2021
On this page you'll learn how to fertilize the fields in Farming Simulator 22, what to fertilize them with and is fertilizing worth your time.
As usual, FS22 allows you to choose between artificial fertilizers in liquid and granular form as well as natural fertilizers such as slurry (obtained from animals as a free by-product). Just like in previous games, you need to fertilize your field twice to maximize the yields from harvesting. Fertilizing twice is optimal (each time you fertilize the field, your yields increase by 23%). This can't be done, however, when the plant is already ready to be harvested.
Methods of fertilizing soil
Fertilizer spreaders and sprayers use up fertilizer even when they're standing still if they're turned on. Therefore you should never use weak tractors for fertilizing, as they'll lower the machine's maximum speed and waste resources.
There are many methods of fertilizing soil and increasing its productivity:
- Oilseed radish - grows one month after planting, provides a free fertilizing level to the field when destroyed by cultivating / plowing. It's a good option to fertilize your field between the harvest and sowing for nearly free.
- Chemical spraying - liquid fertilizer. The same device can be used to spray fertilizer and herbicide which protects your plants from weeds.
- Artificial fertiliser - many seeders / planters have an artificial fertilzier container. Some fertilizer spreaders can also scatter lime which is periodically needed in the fields.
- Manure - a solid natural fertilizer produced by cows and pigs when you supply them with straw.
- Manure - a liquid natural fertiliser produced by animals.
- Digestate - has a liquid form. It's created in a biogas plant (you must have one to produce it) by using silage, manure or slurry (it also generates profit by processing fertilizer).
Each method differs in availability, price, fertilizing speed and machines available for the specific fertilizing methods.
Double fertilizing at once
FS22 introduces the possibility of fertilizing the field two times at once. This option is only available for natural fertilizers. Select the double fertilizing option in the machine's settings after attaching it to a tractor to fully fertilize your field in a single go - although you'll obviously need to spend double the fertilizer.
When to fertilize?
You can fertilize the soil before or after plowing / cultivating / sowing. You can also do it while the plants are growing but before they're ready to be harvested. In order to fertilize the field twice, you must use two different fertilizers in a single month or fertilize between activities (for example, before and after sowing or mulching).
Oilseed radish
Oilseed radish is a specific type of plant. After placing it in the soil you need to wait a month until it's "ready to be harvested". You don't actually harvest it - instead you should cultivate the field (or plow it), destroying the radish and fertilizing the soil (a single fertilizing level). Oilseed radish serves as a nearly free (the only cost are the seeds) fertilizing option which requires some extra work on your part. It can also be done during the interval between harvesting and sowing.
