Pillars Of Eternity 2: Leveling up Pillars Of Eternity 2 Guide and Walkthrough

Last update: 20 November 2022

Leveling up and developing your characters are one of the most basic elements of Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire's gameplay. This page focuses on how this process work for single and multi-class characters.

The highlighted part shows your current amount of XP and the amount that is required to reach a new level.

Get a required amount of points to level up - each new level requires more points. Your current and a required amount of XP can be found in the character sheet screen (its icon is located at the bottom of the screen or you can press "C" key to open it).

Experience points are gained in three ways:

  1. Completing quests - completing a quest successfully gives you a large amount of XP.
  2. Discovering locations - each newly discovered location gives you XP regardless of whether it is a huge dig site or a small cabin.
  3. Bestiary entries - remember that in Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire you don't get XP for killing monsters but only for adding them to your bestiary. Depending on a monster you may have to kill a single enemy of a given type or kill a few of them.

More information about this topic can be found in the FAQ section - "How to easily get XP?"

The game informs you about gaining a new level by displaying a plus icon on a character's portrait. Click on it to open a character sheet window - you can select one active and one passive skill per level (regardless of whether you play as a single or multiclass character) - more about these skills can be found in "Active and passive skills" chapter.

Power Levels reveal multiple new sets of spells and abilities.

Select the aforementioned abilities to open another menu - here, you can buy new spells and abilities. They are divided by Power Levels which look like rows (just like in the picture above - from I to IX, higher Power Levels offer more powerful abilities) that are unlocked by developing your character (check the tables below).

Single class characters receive one ability point per level (which you can spend on various spells and bonuses). Reaching a new Power Level - which unlocks a new row - gives you two ability points.

Getting new Power Levels for single class characters looks like this:

A multiclass character also receives one ability point per level (you can spend this point on any of the trees offered by a character's class). Unlocking a new Power Level gives you two ability points - one per class tree. However, a multiclass character is slower at gaining new Power Levels. What is more, the last two levels (with the most powerful spells and abilities) are blocked for that character.

Getting new Power Levels for multiclass characters looks like this:
