The Quest for Tyr is a main quest from God of War Ragnarok during which you visit Svartalfheim. Our walkthrough explains how to solve the puzzles with geysers, how to reach Nidavellir and the mines, how to solve the puzzles with water flow and cranes, and how to free Tyr.

The second main quest in God of War Ragnarok is The Quest for Tyr, which has to be completed in Svartalfheim. You will learn how to solve the puzzles with geysers, how to get to Nidavellir, how to use sound arrows, how to solve the puzzles with water flow and cranes, how to reach the mine, where to find Tyr and how to return with Tyr to Sindri's house.

Journey to Nidavellir
You start the quest in Svartalfheim and must travel to the settlement called Nidavellir. Along the way you can do optional exploration to come across collectibles, loot or places to start favours (side quests).
The heroes will reach the boat and set off to Nidavellir. The first dam with a big wheel will appear on the river - you need to solve a puzzle to unlock the passage. Reach the shore next to the dam. Here you will encounter the first geyser. You can deal with them by using Leviathan - throw the axe at the geyser to turn into an ice shelf and this will allow you to move on.
Do the same with the second geyser and climb to a higher shelf. Grab onto the wooden structure and move from side to side while hanging. Reach the top and slide down to the lower location.
You will fight monsters - use blocks, parries, dodges and Spartan Rage. Reach the top of the new wooden structure. In the place from the picture, you can use the Blades on the big wheel. Pull the Blades to unlock the passage. You can return to the boat.
Keep swimming and go under the bridge. You will reach the second dam and again start by swimming to the shore (the one closer to the dam).
Attack the new monsters and then approach the closed dome.
Throw the Blades at the dome to open it and make a new geyser appear.
Use Leviathan on the geyser to create an ice shelf and get to the other side. Climb to higher shelves now.
Stand in the place from the picture and throw the axe at the upper geyser. This will increase the force of the lower geyser, which will move the wheel and lower the gate. Wait until the gate lowers completely, summon Leviathan and return to the boat.
The river will take you to the last, third, dam. Unlocking the passage requires reaching 2 chains.
At the place in the picture you have to hit the hitch with Leviathan so that it can drop a large cargo. This will allow you to get closer to the first chain and interact with it. Half of the puzzle is done.
Use Leviathan on the geyser and, after creating a new ice shelf, move on. Get rid of monsters and grab a new closed geyser (1 in our picture) with your Blades.
After opening the geyser, throw the axe at the left one (2 in our picture). The power of the right geyser increases and the big wheel will begin to move.
This will cause the heavy cargo do move down. After summoning Leviathan back, you must hit the upward-moving hitch (image above) with your axe. If you miss, repeat the last part of the puzzle.
If you hit it, it will drop a large cargo. Run there and climb it. You must now throw the axe at the geyser shown in the above picture, the one that was previously hidden under the dome.
The "elevator" will move with you to the top. You will be next to the second chain - use it to unlock the dam on the river. You can return to the boat.
Sail through the caves and reach Nidavellir. Moor the boat in a place with a blue flag.
Explore Nidavellir
Head toward the upper part of the settlement. You will meet Sindri, who will upgrade Atreus' bow. You can test this weapon right away - Atreus can destroy green blockades by shooting sound shots. Look at a barricade or green object and order Atreus to shoot (Square).
Sound arrows will also help you get to some collectibles and loot. There are several such locations in Nidavellir itself, and you can go back to them.
Squeeze through the new passage. In the next part of Nidavellir, find the cart blocking the road and use a sound arrow on its cargo. You will reach a hut, where you will talk to Raeb.
You can talk to Raeb again to get a favour called In Service of Asgard, one of Svartalfheim's larger side quests.
Boat to Durlin's office
Go out of the hut and get a compass from Sindri. You will learn about following the main (golden icons) and side quests (blue icons). Keep walking through the village. You will reach a marina with a boat and unlock a new Mystic Gateway (fast travel point).
Use the boat to reach the Bay of Bounty. Exploring the entire location is optional. To focus on the main task, sail southwest toward the marker. Moor the boat next to Durlin's house (above image), go inside and watch the cut-scene.
Reach the mine beyond the mountain
Leave the office through the new exit and defeat monsters. You can shoot at the green parts of the structure, and use sound arrows on the barricades on the hanging platform.
Reach the wide gate and move on. The heroes will reach a wagon. Get inside and wait for it to transport you to a new location. You will reach the Forge.
Reach the front of the broken train
Soon after you start exploring the Forge, you will pass under the rocks and reach the lair of a mini-boss - the great lizard Dreki. We described this fight on a separate page Dreki in the Bosses chapter.
After the battle is over, be sure to collect all the loot dropped by the mini-boss. These will include Chaos Flame and Light Runic Attack. Pass between the rocks to leave the arena.
Along the way you will pass, e.g. a nest of monsters - destroy it to stop the monsters from spawning. Eventually, you will reach the second wagon. Use the Blades of Chaos to unhook the trailer. You have to solve a mini-puzzle of putting the wagon on the rails. Listen to Atreus' comments and move left or right.
Enter the wagon. While riding, you will be attacked by monsters and must complete QTEs - pressing buttons according to the instructions on the screen. This may protect you from damage. You will be caught by a troll, but just press R2 again.
Search the mines for Tyr
Defeat the monsters and start exploring the mines. You can destroy new green objects with Atreus' arrows, and also blow up yellow barricades by hitting the red jugs next to them. Find the narrow passage that leads to the Jarnsmida Pitmines.
You will reach the place where you have to solve the first puzzle with water. Choose Leviathan and throw the axe at the wooden trough above the hanging cargo (picture). Water will begin to flow into it and the cargo will go down. In the place where the cargo was hanging, an interactive hook will appear - grab it. You will land on a new shelf.
Catch the next hook and you will reach the second water puzzle. Start by reaching the vertical boards - you can prop Atreus up so he can reach the upper balconies.
Wait until Atreus reaches the upper mechanism and give him the command (Square). The mechanism will be set in motion - throw the axe at the working cog (above image) and jump to the stopped shelf.
Summon the axe to you and jump over the next shelves until you reach a hanging square block. On the right, you can catch the new mechanism with the Blades of Chaos(image). Turn it around and the water will start flowing in a different place.
A stone block will rise - move on.
Turn 180 degrees and throw Leviathan at the wooden trough from the picture. The water will stop flowing onto the wheel and the stone block will lower again. Use the Blades to climb on it.
Summon the axe to you, and the wooden trough will be unlocked. The stone block on which you are standing will rise. Jump to the shelf in front of you and raise the gate. Atreus will join you.
On the way to the mine entrance, move the cart and you will meet Sindri, from whom you will get light sources. In the caves you must defeat Bersgra mother. Focus on weakening this monster, as it can spawn smaller creatures. Watch out for her red attacks and evade them.
You will start the boat trip to Applecore. When you reach its end, you can optionally use the dwarves' store.
You will reach an area with another puzzle.
Water flow and chain puzzle:
- ask Atreus to hit the objects marked as point 1 in the picture with a sound arrow to unlock the flow of water;
- throw Leviathan at the wooden trough fragment marked as point 2;
- by blocking the trough, the water should now flow toward the circle marked as point 3.
An interactive hook will rise - grab onto it and jump to the distant shelf. Open the door and move on.
Destroy green objects to unlock access to the rift. The twisting path leads to the chamber with the first crane puzzle.
Jump down to the right ledge and climb up the chain. Reach the place shown in the picture - grab the hook with the Blades of Chaos to stop the water flow. The elevator should go to the top.
Return to the puzzle's starting point. You need to throw the Leviathan at the trough, specifically at the place marked in the picture - the water should start flowing onto the wheel under the trough and set it in motion.
An interactive hook will rise - grab onto it and jump to the distant shelf.
Look up and throw Leviathan at the top trough shown in the picture. The nearby wheel should start turning in the opposite direction and the elevator will go down.
Open the elevator and go inside. Summon Leviathan, and the elevator will start moving. At the top you will find an exit door. Defeat monsters and get your first relic - you can equip them in the inventory to get stat bonuses. Defeat more monsters and find a gap.
While moving forward, order Atreus to hit the hanging basket with green objects. This will reveal an interactive hook.
You will reach the location with the second crane puzzle. Atreus must first shoot the lower crystals (image). Then use the chain to unroll the rope and slide down to the lower shelf.
Head to the left first and reach the place where you can help Atreus go up. The boy will climb onto the upper balconies.
Aim for the wooden trough marked in the picture - next to the wheel, which you can set in motion. The nearby platform will move. When it stops, ask Atreus to use the mechanism (Square) he is standing by.
Summon Leviathan to you and turn to the right. You must throw the axe at the trough next to the shifted platform (image), in the section above the new wheel, which will be set in motion.
An interactive hook will rise - grab onto it and jump to the shifted platform. Summon the axe and ask Atreus to hit the nuggets from the nearby trough. This will unlock the flow of water and you will move on the platform to the exit.
You will reach a chamber with a large gate - order Atreus to shoot its weak green points. You will encounter Einherjar enemies for the first time - they can inflict Bifrost. Don't let them hit you multiple times - this can cause an explosion and you will lose more health. When you get this negative status, do more dodging and ranged attacks until the effect disappears.
After the fight, make a try to open the gate again - press X quickly. You will find Tyr.
Exit the mines with Tyr
Follow Tyr - there is no risk of losing him. Destroy barricades along the way, kill enemies (including an elite one) and watch out for Bifrost.
Follow Tyr and reach the elevator (you have to manually start it). You will reach the surface.
Escape through the Mystic Gateway
Defeat the monsters and reach the ferry crossing. You have to pull the chain - first with the combination L2 and R2 and then quickly pressing X. You need to return to the Mystic Gateway that got you to Svartalfheim. You will reach the Sindri's house.
Go to the marked chamber to talk to Mimir. You will switch to Atreus and start the next main quest - Old Friends.
