One of the new weapons appearing in God of War Ragnarok is the Draupnir Spear. From this page of our guide, you'll learn when and how can you unlock the spear. We've also explained the uses of the spear, such as defeating enemies, unlocking access to optional locations, and acquiring previously inaccessible secrets. You'll need to use the spear fully in order to attain 100% completion of the game.
Unlocking the Draupnir Spear - Kratos' third weapon
The Draupnir Spear is a new addition to Kratos' arsenal introduced in God of War Ragnarok. Aside from it, the available weapons are the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos.
The axe and the blades are unlocked shortly after starting the main storyline, but the spear is received late in the game. It is acquired in the course of the Forging Destiny story quest, i.e. during the second trip to Svartalfheim.
Kratos and Brok will reach the Forge, and after solving the puzzle involving repairing the switch, they will meet Lady of the Forge. Spear will be given to you by her.
From now on, you can find the spear in the weapons tab of your inventory. You can upgrade the spear (when visiting dwarven stores) as well as install Handles and light and heavy runic attacks.
To select the spear, press the d-pad down. You can freely choose and switch between these three weapons.
There is a skill tree for the spear. You can spend XP amassed by Kratos to buy skills for this weapon, as well as perform Skill Labours to upgrade them.
Spear uses - combat, puzzles, collectibles
Spear can and should be used in combat. It has the power of the wind element and can launch melee and ranged attacks. The thrown spears can be detonated by pressing Triangle. You can detonate 1 or a few spears for the effect to be stronger.
Buying upgrades from the spear tree can improve the power of already-known attacks or unlock access to new ones.
The spear is also used during exploration and when reaching secrets. You can use it on cracks/weak points with air escaping out of them, which are also encountered in locations that you've visited when you were without the spear. There are 2 main uses of the spear when exploring:
- exploding obstacles to unlock new pathways;
- using the spear as a means of climbing.
The spear can also destroy distant targets, and its great advantage is that, unlike the Leviathan Axe, it always flies in a straight line. This may be helpful when attempting to hit distant runes, Odin's Ravens, or destroyable objects.
We have discussed the above-mentioned techniques in more detail in the How to deal with weak points with air coming out of them? page of the FAQ chapter. and How to hit distant targets?.
