This page of the guide explains the combat in God of War Ragnarok - the weapons and abilities available to Kratos, whether they can be upgraded, and if Atreus accompanies him in battle.
Leviathan Axe
The Leviathan is Kratos' main weapon. With it, the hero not only inflicts a lot of damage in combat, but can also attack at a distance or freeze enemies with special attacks. Moreover, Leviathan is useful for solving environmental puzzles.
Blades of Chaos
The Blades of Chaos are familiar to all fans of the God of War franchise. Blades not only inflict damage, but can also set enemies and environmental elements on fire, and are used by Kratos to quickly move through locations - the hero uses them like a grappling hook, allowing him to jump over large chasms or move elements of the environment.
Melee
As in the previous game, Kratos in God of War Ragnarok will be able to fight without weapons, using only his fists and legs. This can be useful when fighting specific types of opponents, or when you want to quickly stun your target.
Shield
In God of War Ragnarok, Kratos can use multiple types of shields, which vary in defensive options as well as abilities. There are two types of shields - heavier ones for better blocking, and lighter ones for better parrying.
Upgrading gear
As you go through God of War Ragnarok, you will acquire a lot of raw materials, which you can use to upgrade the weapons and other equipment. Items can be upgraded at any dwarven shop, and you will find quite a few of these along your path.
Rune attacks
In GoW Ragnarok, heroes can use not only the usual light and strong attacks, but also runic attacks, which are additionally infused with magic and can cause certain effects.
Help from companions
As you explore the world of God of War Ragnarok, you will be accompanied by other characters besides Atreus. Companions support Kratos in battle, but also suggest ideas if you get stuck in some place for a long while so you should listen to their dialogues.
Companions can also be given commands to, for example, attack a specific enemy with the appropriate skill or to use their abilities to help you solve an environmental puzzle. What's more, companions pay attention to what's going on behind your back and, if necessary, will warn you.
Enemies
When exploring all the worlds available in God of War Ragnarok, you will encounter different types of enemies. Some of them will be easy to defeat, while others will require using additional skills or be immune to one of the elements. Don't forget about boss fights - GoW Ragnarok has more of them than God of War 2018.
