Return of the River is a favour from Vanaheim in God of War Ragnarok. The walkthrough tells you how to unlock the side quest in the Jungle region, how to get to the dam, and how to solve the puzzle of opening the dam and sinking the Crater.
Rewards for favour
- Kratos XP - 500
- Freja XP - 125
Unlocking the quest
You must first unlock the Crater, the hidden northern region of Vanaheim. We described it on a separate page - Reaching the Crater in Vanaheim.
Use any Celestial Altar - you have to make the night come. Some of the barricades you encounter during the day will disappear. Head from the Plains region in the Crater to the Jungle region - you must head southwest. Upon reaching the Jungle, the heroes will notice a dam and the favour will automatically appear in the journal.
Ascend the dam
Head west toward the dam. At the place in the picture, ask your companion to create a seal and set fire to the red vines - this will unlock the elevator. You can use the elevator to get to the top and next to the dam.
At the top, kill enemies. At the spot in the picture, throw the spear at the weak spot and detonate it. You will unlock a gap - you need to squeeze through it to the other side of the dam.
Flood the crater
Defeat new enemies. You will find a large crank, but it is blocked. You need to set fire to the red vines - you need to form several seals next to each other and grab the nearest one with the Blades of Chaos. You will cause a chain explosion - all red vines should get burned.
You can now move the crank - this will open the dam.
Return to the eastern part of the dam. You will learn that all regions of the Crater (Plains, Sinkholes, Jungle) have been flooded, i.e. rivers and reservoirs have appeared in them. You can use boats from now on to reach new areas in the Crater (and to find secrets and loot in the water).
