Odin is the final boss of God of War Ragnarok. On this page of our guide, we deliver a detailed description for both phases of the encounter, which takes place in Asgard (in front of The Great Lodge and in a large cave) and is a part of The Realms At War story quest. We've compiled a list of all major boss' attacks and explain how to properly damage Odin and successfully complete QTE scenes.
Battle arena
Defeating Odin is the final task of the main storyline. The battle against Odin will begin immediately after defeating Thor for the second time (The Realms At War story quest).
You need to defeat Odin twice, and the first battle will take place in the same place where you fought Thor, which is in front of The Great Lodge in Asgard.
First Battle
Most of Odin's attacks place a bifrost effect on Kratos when struck. If a bifrost status was imposed, avoid receiving damage for a while, as, after a moment, an explosion will take place, which will take additional health from you.
In melee range, Odin uses his weapons - these are regular or yellow attacks, which can be parried.
When it comes to red attacks, Odin shoots rays of energy - after you notice that Odin is levitating, be ready to jump to sides correctly.
Odin often uses an attack that involves firing a barrage of projectiles - this is a normal attack and you can block it, but the window of opportunity is small.
After the boss loses 3 health bars, the arena will break into several parts divided by small chasms.
Once the arena is broken into pieces, Odin receives access to a new area of effect attack - its radius is marked by highlighted areas of the floor (screenshot above) You must react quickly - jump to areas that are safe.
When dealing damage of your own, use as many of Kratos' unique weapons attacks are possible in order to maximize the damage output. It's best to attack right after the boss attacks, in order to make sure Odin doesn't relocate to a new area.
During the battle, you can use Atreus' help and Spartan Rage. Also look around for green objects in the arena to replenish your health.
Continue fighting until the boss is stunned - once that happens, you can press R3 after running up to Odin.
A scene will be activated, and after its conclusion, the second battle against Odin begins.
Second Battle
The second clash with Odin takes place in a large cave. You must deprive the boss of his entire health bar for the second time.
In addition to Kratos and Atreus, Freya will also take part in the battle - she can assist you occasionally in weakening the boss.
The newest addition to the boss' moveset is attacking with a purple whip - the attack is classified as red, so the only way to go is to dodge.
Whip attacks involve sweeps and vertical strikes (easier to avoid). At first, you only have to worry about single attacks, but as the battle progresses, you may have to avoid a few strikes in a row.
A new yellow attack involves sending ravens. Theoretically it can be parried, but it is safer to just dodge.
Odin can use blue attacks - disrupt the casting process by hitting him with your shield (run up to the boss and press L1x2)
One of the boss' new attacks involves casting large red projectiles. They home towards their target (that means you) but are slow, and you don't have to react immediately once they appear. You can destroy them with standard ranged attacks, or by firing one of the more powerful area-of-effect attacks.
Odin will be stunned once he loses about a half of his health bar. Run up to him and press R3. Unfortunately, this is not the end of the battle.
From this point on, the boss will begin to surround himself with additional armor and this means switching to a weapon that will effectively destroy it.
Odin armor markings:
- Blue armor bar means you should use the Blades of Chaos;
- Orange armor bar means you should use the Leviathan Axe;
- Gray armor bar means that you should use the Draupnir Spear.
When faced with Odin's fiery attacks, use your shield - they move horizontally.
The boss can also bombard the arena with projectiles - avoid the red circles that symbolize their target.
Depriving Odin of his health bar will allow you to press R3 when approaching a stunned boss.
All that's left is to pass the final QTE sequence - press buttons according to the instructions on the screen. With a joint effort of all 3 heroes, Odin is defeated.
