God of War Ragnarok: Chasms in the Crater in Vanaheim - the Plains, the Sinkholes, the Jungle God of War Ragnarok guide

This page of the guide to God of War Ragnarok explains how to solve the problem of the Crater Abyss in Vanaheim. We explain how to flood the Crater and unlock the full exploration of the Plains, Barrens and Jungle regions. This is in order to explore Vanaheim 100%.

Last update: 17 November 2022

The possibilities of exploring the northern part of Vanaheim in God of War Ragnarok are restricted by large chasms. This page of the guide explains how to fill the Crater with water in order to allow you to explore the Plains, the Sinkholes and the Jungle regions more freely. Doing this is required if you want to find all secrets and complete all Vanaheim activities.

Problem with chasms - the Plains, the Sinkholes, the Jungle

As a reminder, the Crater is the northern part of Vanaheim - God of War Ragnarok: Chasms in the Crater in Vanaheim - the Plains, the Sinkholes, the Jungle - Completing 100% of maps - God of War Ragnarok Guide

As a reminder, the Crater is the northern part of Vanaheim. It is separated from the main part of this land and you can reach it for the first time by completing the Scent of Survival favour ( boat flight).

Exploring the Crater is hampered by numerous and very extensive chasms. You may see new areas to explore in the distance (example in the picture), but Kratos won't be able to get there at the beginning (with a few exceptions, namely the top parts). This might make it impossible to discover 100% of the regions here, the Plains, the Sinkholes and the Jungle.

Opening the dam and creating new reservoirs and rivers

You can solve the problem of inaccessible locations in the Crater by opening a dam in the Jungle - God of War Ragnarok: Chasms in the Crater in Vanaheim - the Plains, the Sinkholes, the Jungle - Completing 100% of maps - God of War Ragnarok Guide

You can solve the problem of inaccessible locations in the Crater by opening a dam in the Jungle. You will learn about the dam and the possibility of opening it when you reach the Jungle for the first time - the Return of the River favour will automatically appear in your journal.

You can go to the Jungle for the first time only at night, because only then will the barricades in the Plains disappear. You can change the time of day by visiting any Celestial Altar.

While completing the optional Return of the River quest, you must reach the dam by elevator and complete the puzzle of getting rid of the red vines - we described this in more detail in our walkthrough in the chapter about Vanaheim favours - God of War Ragnarok: Chasms in the Crater in Vanaheim - the Plains, the Sinkholes, the Jungle - Completing 100% of maps - God of War Ragnarok Guide

While completing the optional Return of the River quest, you must reach the dam by elevator and complete the puzzle of getting rid of the red vines - we described this in more detail in our walkthrough in the chapter about Vanaheim favours. The dam will be opened.

After unblocking the dam, the chasms in the Plains, the Sinkholes and the Jungle will be filled with water - God of War Ragnarok: Chasms in the Crater in Vanaheim - the Plains, the Sinkholes, the Jungle - Completing 100% of maps - God of War Ragnarok Guide

After unblocking the dam, the chasms in the Plains, the Sinkholes and the Jungle will be filled with water.

From now on, boat travel will become available - you will be able to arrive at new locations and seek new boat docks.

Don't forget about the possibility to find treasures on the water - these can include Yggdrasil's Dew and underwater loot.
