Scent of survival is a favor from the land of Vanaheim in the game God of War Ragnarok. The walkthrough from our guide explains how to unlock the quest to follow Helka and how to reach the hidden Crater region by flying boat.

One of the side quests from the Vanaheim region in God of War Ragnarok is the Scent of Survival favour. The walkthrough explains when you can unlock the side quest, how to follow Helka's tracks, how to go around the blockade made of boughs, and how to ride a paper boat to the Crater which is a secret region of Vanaheim.

Unlocking the quest
You can start this quest after completing the Creatures of Prophecy main quest. At the end of this task, you will reach Freyr's camp in Vanaheim.
Choose the western exit from the camp. The heroes will note that Helka (a friendly animal) has found a new lead.
Chase after Helka
Continue walking west to reach the river. From this point on you can find Helka's blue footprints - they will lead north.
You have to jump into a boat and sail towards the Northern Wilds region.
The path will lead you to Helka waiting on the upper shelf (above image). You can't get there at night, because the climbing spot will be blocked by branches.
There is a Celestial Altar (above image) - use it to change the time to day.
Return to the same place - you can now use the Blades of Chaos to grab the top edge.
Ride the paper boat to the crater
Reach the viewpoint at which Helka will stop. You can interact here and summon the paper boat received in the Creatures of Prophecy quest.
You will start the flight to the Crater - no interactions are performed here. The quest will end before you even land in the Crater, but you can and should explore the huge new hidden area of Vanaheim. There are 3 regions in the Crater to search - the Plains, the Sinkholes and the Jungle. You can also easily unlock the Mystic Gateway and return to this place later using fast travel.
