Dwarvem Smithing is a special type of equipment upgrade in DD2. On this page we will show you where to start and how to complete the Put a Spring in Thy Step quest that will allow you to unlock them.

Dwarven Smithing is one of the equipment upgrade styles available in the game. A weapon enhanced in this way is characterized by greater knockdown power, while improved armor will allow you to take more damage without making your hero lose balance. Unlocking Dwarven Smithing will require completing a specific side quest in the Battahl region. On this page we will explain how to do this.

How to start the Put a Spring in Thy Step quest?
To start the quest that will give you the opportunity to use Dwarven Smithing, you must go to the western edge of Volcanic Island - located south of Battahl. You will get there by going through the Spellseal Door in Bakbattahl. To open it, however, you will have to progress to A New Godsway main quest. This is a stage in the second half of the game, after the coronation of the false Arisen, a few quests after arriving and starting the storyline in the capital of Battahl.
An alternative is to take the road south of the capital and cross Drabnir's Grotto, which connects Battahl with the Volcanic Island. This road is teeming with enemies (bandits, knackers, harpies), and in the cave itself, you must watch out for groups of hobgoblins and an armored Cyclops guarding the exit. However, if you manage to get out on the other side, you will find yourself right next to the starting location of the quest you are looking for.
While walking along the main road in the western part of the island, you encounter a bent old man named Gautstafr. Talk to him. Complaining about back pain, he will ask you to find 3 healing plants. You can look for:
- Goldthistle;
- Pitywort;
- Morningtide;
- Syrupwort Leaf.
It's very possible that at this stage of the game you will have the appropriate amount of these plants in your inventory. If not, check your Pawns' inventory or look around the area. Commonly occurring ingredients should not be too difficult to find.
After you give Gautstafr the ingredients, he will thank you and invite you to his house. The active task marker on the map will help you get there. The cottage is located by the sea, not far north from the place of the first meeting.
Upon arrival, you will witness a brief argument between the old man and his elven beloved - Cliodhna. During the conversation, Gautstafr will start complaining about his aching back again. Suggest to him an escort to the Geyser Hamlet healing springs. The man will agree to your offer and the task objective will be updated.
How to get to Geyser Hamlet with Gautstafr?
Leave Gautstafr's hut and follow the road west. The man doesn't move too fast so every now and then stop so he can catch up. If you run too fast, the old man will stop you and ask to slow down.
If Gautstafr's speed irritates you, you can try to carry him. However, remember that from time to time you will have to put him on the ground to deal with dangers on the route.
There are two paths leading to Volcanic Island Camp:
- Northern - shorter, closer to the ocean, leading through caves;
- Southern - longer, most of the time in open space.
From our experience, there is a high probability of encountering a large opponent (i.e., one with a separate health bar at the top of the screen) on both paths. In the case of coastal caves, it was a Minotaur, while in the south - a Cyclops and a Golem. On both roads we also encountered a Griffin and numerous groups of hobgoblins.
The artificial intelligence controlling Gautstafr handles avoiding trouble during combat quite well, and the old man himself is quite resistant to damage. Therefore, you should not worry about his safety even during more fierce battles.
After reaching the settlement, head towards the wooden scaffolding in its center. Go all the way up, and then through the small tunnel. You will reach the healing springs hidden among volcanic rocks.
Upon entering the bathhouse building, Gautstafr will thank you for your help and immediately head to the hot springs. His beloved Cliodhna will also appear and will give you 23,000 gold and Laurel Circlet as a reward. The archery master also unlocks the Magick-Archer vocation for you, and offer a scroll teaching the Spellbow's Paradox master skill for this class.
How to improve equipment with Dwarven Smithing?
After completing the Put a Spring in Thy Step quest, you can return to Gautstafr's house, which from now on will function as a weapon store. By selecting the "Enhance Equipment" option, you will be able to use Dwarven Smithing.
The Dwarven Smithing style is characterized by the following properties:
- The weapon has a greater piercing power, which can knock the enemy off balance;
- Armors increase your resistance to being knocked off balance.
The Dwarven upgrade will therefore work well for classes that fight with melee weapons, such as Fighter or Warrior.
To upgrade your weapon or armor, select the item you are interested in from the list on the left. The middle table will show you what ingredients you will need to provide and how much you will have to pay for the upgrade. Every item has 3 slots for upgrades and it's up to you whether you decide to invest all of them in one style (such as the Dwarven Smithing mentioned here), or maybe combine several different ones. The decision will be made easier for you by the table on the right side, where you can see how the item's statistics will change after the upgrade.
