How to start The Stolen Throne task?
Up to now, tasks from Captain Brant involved fighting groups of monsters, stealing letters, and freeing imprisoned officials. During one of your next visits to Stairdrop Inn, the military official will ask you to infiltrate a royal masquerade ball and obtain sensitive data about the false king. Before the actual infiltration, however, you're going to need to prepare a few things.
How to get a formal outfit?
To blend in well with the crowd of aristocrats and the wealthy, you're going to need a formal outfit. The set you need to wear for the party includes a mask received from Captain Brant, Courtly Breeches, and Courtly Tunic. There are several ways to get what you need, but the easiest way involves completing The Ornate Box quest where you borrow some money to Sven, who then thank you a few days later by giving you a present. You can read more about this quest in Should I give gold to Sven? page of our guide.
The alternative involves finding elegant clothing in a few locations around the palace district of Vernworth. The chests with the set items can be found in:
- Sven's Chamber;
- Second floor of Allard's Estate;
- First floor of Comptroller's Home;
- In a small utility room at the back of Vernworth Hall (the same building where the masquerade is held).
Once you have the needed equipment, you can proceed to the masquerade.
In theory, there is also an option to buy the formal outfit from one of the merchants in the city, but the absurd sum of money that the vendor asks (150,000G) makes it completely unfeasible.
How to join the masquerade and find the secret passage?
Once you have the complete set of formal clothing, go to the nearest bench or bed, and fast-forward time to evening hours. The party happens in Vernworth Hall. However, it isn't held every day, so if there aren't any guests at the destination, and the guard sends you away, you need to repeat the attempt the next night.
Upon arriving to the hall, you'll watch a short cut-scene featuring false Arisen walking down the corridor. You can immediately follow him or snoop around the area a bit, listening to the conversations of the Vernworth elite. To continue with the quest, go to the corridor behind the round hall. On one of the walls between doors you'll notice a suspiciously-looking fragment of the surface. Push the element to reveal a camouflaged secret passage.
The passage will lead you to a balcony that connects with the brothel. Once you enter the brothel, a long cut-scene will play where you learn the secret of the false king. When the cut-scene ends, you can go back to Captain Brant to report on your findings. Doing so concludes The Stolen Throne quest.
