When choosing a starting vocation, many of you may notice the Mage class - a ruler of arcane knowledge who fights with a staff, strikes enemies with lightning and heals their companions with healing spells. On this page, we will present you with the most important information related to casting spells and we will give you a handful of tips that will make it easier for you to start your adventure as a Mage.
How to cast spells?
After selecting the Mage vocation in character creator, you will be get your first staff in the tutorial. This type of weapon has a basic attack, Focused Bolt, which sends a magic projectile towards the opponent. The energy orb basically flies instantly, does not consume any resources, and has a decent range, which allows the Mage to flood the opponents with a hail of projectiles between casting more powerful spells.
In addition to Focused Bolt, the Mage also has access to the basic healing spell - Anodyne. After casting it, a semicircular sphere appears around a hero, regenerating part of their health. Both the protagonist and the companions within the spell's range.
By holding the appropriate button, you gain access to more advanced skills, or the spells that interest you the most. The basic offensive spell is the fiery Flagration. After selecting it, the Mage will begin an incantation (the enchantment process), during which their speed drops significantly and they become defenseless. That's why it's so important to position yourself correctly on the battlefield and rely on the companions who are defending you. If the incantation is interrupted by an enemy, you will need to start it over again.
If you are close enough to the enemy, a circle will appear around them during the incantation to help you aim. You can hold the spell for a while and release it at a convenient moment. This pattern is the same in the case of later, more powerful spells.
Be aware, however, that many late-game spells may have significantly increased incantation times. This will be particularly noticeable if you decide to change your vocation to Sorcerer, whose more powerful attacks are offset by increased preparation time.
How to speed up spell casting?
However, there is a fairly simple way to speed up the incantation time of individual spells. After unlocking the development of vocations at an early stage of the game, in the Mage's basic abilities tab you will find the Quickspell perk. It allows you to significantly speed up the spell casting time at the expense of your stamina. While casting a spell, hold down the appropriate button. Used at a crucial moment, it allows for an instant casting of a spell. However, pay attention to the health bar, because if your weakened character is surrounded by enemies, you can easily die.
