Avowed: How to activate companion abilities?
Avowed companions' skills can help you win battles and explore the world. This page of the guide tells you how to manually enable the skills of your team members and whether they can be activated automatically.
Last update:
In Avowed you cannot personally control other party members, but you can activate your companions' abilities. On this guide page we have included instructions on how to manually activate companion abilities and whether this process can be automated.
How to manually select companion abilities?
- Once you recruit a new team member, you'll learn their starting skills (example for Marius in the image).
- You can also go to the Companion Abilities tab. This will allow you to spend development points (which are earned separately for each character) to develop your companions' skills or unlock completely new ones.
- Companion abilities are selected from the abilities dial - as a reminder, it is activated by the LB button on the controller.
- The skill dial displays the active skills of your team members. It does not take into account passive skills, because they always work in the background.
- Highlight a skill on the selection wheel and confirm that you want to use it. Instead of an ability icon, you may also see a counter - this is the current cooldown of the ability. Only after the countdown ends will it be possible to reactivate it. Until then, choose other abilities or fight without them.
Many companion abilities can only be used in specific situations, for example:
- After targeting an enemy: turn the camera towards them while having the ability selection activated;
- After encountering a matching interaction in the world: these may include barricades that Kai is able to set on fire; then an appropriate icon will appear (example in the screenshot).
Automatic ability activation
- An additional convenience is the option to Auto Activate Companion Abilities - you will find it in the Game tab and it is enabled by default.
- The convenience means that your companion can activate the ability on their own, without waiting for a command from you. This can make it much easier for you to focus on controlling only the main character. This solution also has its drawbacks, because your companion may, for example, waste an ability on a weak monster. Turn this feature off if you want full control on the battlefield.
