How to lower the difficulty level in Avowed? In our guide you will find a list of all difficulty levels along with descriptions of how each of them may facilitate gameplay, e.g. by introducing aim assist or simpler dodges. On the page we also described how to interpret the skulls next to the names of enemies and quests, as well as how to equip your hero with higher quality gear.

List of difficulty levels

  1. You can select the difficulty level for the first time in the last tab of the character creator. The devs have prepared 5 difficulty levels: Story Time, Easy, Normal, Hard and Path of the Damned.
  2. The main differences lie in combat. At the lowest difficulty level you don't need to rely on advanced attacks, enemies deal little damage and lose health quickly. On the other hand, when playing at higher settings, you need to skillfully develop your character build, use abilities wisely and regularly upgrade or replace the main character's equipment.
  3. Your choice of a difficulty level is not final. You can change the difficulty level throughout your playthrough by going to the Game tab in the options menu.

How to lower the difficulty level?

In addition to selecting the main difficulty level, there are various smaller simplifications available in the game options (primarily the Game and Accessibility tabs). The following are the most interesting ones:

  1. Tutorials and Reminders: these are enabled by default. Tutorials can cover key mechanics as they are unlocked or used for the first time. Reminders can inform you, for example, that you have materials to upgrade your equipment.
  2. Auto Activate Companion Abilities: this is enabled by default. Party members can use some of their active abilities on their own without you having to manually select them and give the companion an order.
  3. Incoming Attack Warnings: enemy attack indicators may appear on screen. They are especially helpful in FPP mode, because you cannot see enemies positioned next to or behind your character.
  4. Aim Assist: facilitates executing all ranged attacks (magic, crossbows, firearms, etc.). You can also adjust how precisely the crosshair will follow your enemies.
  5. Attack Moves Towards Target: this is enabled by default. This makes it easier to focus on the enemy you're attacking, but can be problematic if you want to quickly switch between enemies.
  6. Dodge Align to Target: this is enabled by default. Your character can automatically turn towards a target when dodging. This will make it easier to attack again right after you finish your dodge.
  7. Slow Time on Dodge Hit: this is disabled by default. It is triggered when the hero takes damage while dodging. This will allow you to better prepare for the next steps once the dodge is complete.
  8. Blocking Aligns to Target: this is enabled by default. Your character can automatically turn towards a target while blocking. This will increase your chances of stopping your opponent's attack.

Harder quests and combat - item levels

  1. Regardless of the difficulty level, you must take into account the additional mechanics of item levels and enemies. The game has a system of skulls that can appear next to the names of quests in the journal and the names of enemies in the game (the example in the screenshot shows as many as 3 skulls).
  2. A higher number of skulls means a high level of challenge: it is better to leave that fight or quest for later.
  1. You can solve the aforementioned problem by leveling up your character and equipping higher quality gear. Initially, all items are of common quality, but as you level up in the game you will see Fine, Exceptional, Superb, and Legendary quality items.
  2. You can either buy/find a higher quality item right away (example in the screenshot) or visit the Party Camp and use crafting materials to upgrade lower quality items. In terms of weapons, this will allow you to deal more damage, and in terms of armor, stop the stronger enemies' attacks.

The topic of stronger enemies is also described on the page Is there level scaling?.
