Companions from the prologue
- In the prologue taking place in Fort Northreach you can recruit 2 companions. Garryck will automatically join you on the beach where you start the game. You can help Ilora get out of her cell - we described this in more detail on the page Is it worth freeing Ilora?.
- After reaching the first main region, Dawnshore, Garryck and Ilora will leave the main character and stand on the pier. You cannot travel with them any further, but you can encounter these characters later in several other locations. You'll need to recruit new companions - we've listed them below.
Kai
- Kai will join you automatically as the first companion. This happens during the main quest Message from Afar, which will start after arriving in the Dawnshore region. Kai is in the Claviger's Landing location and you can't miss him.
- Kai's active skills include a fire shot from a firearm, health regeneration and damage reduction, and a high jump. He also has the Second Wind ability, which allows him to revive himself on the battlefield. Firestarter is a very useful ability related to exploration - with it you can destroy many types of barricades, such as spiderwebs or brambles.
Marius
- Marius will join you as your second companion. You encounter him during the main quest An Untimely End. He can be found in the Grinning Balarok tavern, located in the Southern Paradis in the Dawnshore region.
- Marius' active skills include keeping an enemy in place, a powerful shot, as well as hiding in a cloud of smoke followed by a surprise attack. He also has the ability to inflict bleeding on enemies. His Hunter's Sense helps in exploration, allowing you to scan the surroundings.
Giatta
- Giatta will join you in the main storyline as your third companion. She can be found in Fior mes Iverno city in the Emerald Stair, although she will not become a party member right away. You must first make enough progress in The Animancy Method main quest.
- Giatta's active abilities include healing all allies, surrounding teammates with an energy shield, and increasing party's speed. She also has the ability to passively heal the party with her attacks. Her Spectral Jolt helps in exploration - it will allow you to activate generators and devices without having to use shock grenades.
Yatzli
- You will recruit Yatzli as your final, fourth companion. The most important encounter with her takes place in Thirdborn city in the Shatterscarp region. It happens during the Face Your Fears main quest.
- Yatzli's active skills can cause essence to explode, fire bursts of projectiles, and slow enemies down. She also has the passive ability to make her attacks affect a wider area. Dispel Illusion helps in exploration - we have described it on a separate page How to remove illusions?.
How to choose companions?
- You can recruit 4 companions throughout the game, but only 2 characters can travel with you at any given time. When you join Giatta (your third ally) to the party, you have to decide on the team composition.
- Party members are selected when leaving the party camp. Frequent changes to the active party are especially advisable regarding exploration. For example, you should take Yatzli anytime you locate a new illusion.
Are there quests and romances with companions?
- Not all companions have personal quests. You can do the larger quests for Kai (Battle Scars) and Marius (Chorus of the Lost). In other cases, you will have to make do with regular conversations with your companions in the party camp. The game informs about a new conversation by using an exclamation mark icon.
- You cannot freely romance everyone in your party. The game only has a limited romance for Kai. For more information, go to the Are there romances? page.
How to develop companions?
- Companion development is unfortunately very limited. They can sometimes level up with your character and gain skill points. Each companion has a tree with 3 active and 1 passive ability. You can further strengthen each of them by unlocking upgrades. You can use active skills via the radial menu, although by default your companions can also activate them themselves.
- The game does not allow you to change your companions' equipment. They have predetermined armor and weapons. The game only allows you to change the appearance of your companions' outfits after interacting with a tent in the camp, but this is merely cosmetic.
Remember that you will not have enough development points to unlock all of companion abilities and upgrades. Focus on those that a given companion uses the most.
