An encumbered character is a problem you may face multiple times in your Avowed playthrough. This guide page explains how to read the current weight of items, how to increase your character's carry capacity and how to recognize and put away the heaviest items from your inventory.

What are the effects of being encumbered?

  1. You can check your encumbered status by opening the character menu. At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 values (image above) - the number on the left is the current equipment weight and the number on the right is your maximum carry capacity.
  2. After exceeding the second value, you will receive a warning about the character being encumbered, and this creates 2 problems - your character will start to move slower and will not be able to sprint. This may complicate not only your travels around the game world, but also handling any dynamic combat. Always try to get rid of this status immediately.

How to increase carry capacity?

  1. The main way to permanently increase your carry capacity is to develop the Might attribute. Invest development points into it to increase the allowed carry capacity limit by a percentage.
  1. An alternative technique is to equip items that increase carry capacity. An example of such an item is the unique Steel Garrote Boots shown in the image, which can raise the limit by 5 points. Of course, the carry capacity bonus is valid only while the item is being used.

How to drop items?

  1. Armor is the heaviest item in the game, which is why you should really focus on it. We advise you to avoid carrying several different armors in your inventory. The game tells you the weight of each item, and some of them weigh nothing.
  2. The best way to organize your inventory is to put unnecessary items in the Party Stash (example in the screenshot). To do this, you need to visit any party camp (we wrote about them on the How to set up a camp? page). You will discover more of them as you travel around the game world. This will allow you to free up your hero's inventory and save the heavy items for later.
  3. Other options include selling or dismantling the heavy equipment. You can visit any trader to do this, or open your inventory, highlight the item, and hold down the disassemble button (you'll get back certain crafting materials). You can read more about this on the What to do with unwanted items? page.
